can anyone suggest a towcar for my senator wyoming 2005 model i already have disco td5 which i want to change i fancy a diesel estate or mpv thanks
hi lol.Does that mean you don't want a 4x4 Brian?
hi roger. The Senator Wyoming Series 5 is 1714kg MTPLM so a towcar just over 2000kg kerbweight would be a good match. If you're excluding 4x4s, I can't think of anything short of a big Bentley!.
thanks icemaker ill have a look at both the seat and vw cheersBrian, i also changed from a disco to a mpv mainly due to the fuel consumption when solo. at the time i had a coachman laser 590/4 which weighed around the same as your bailey and after checking with towsafe we opted for a ford galaxy tdi, unfortunately the galaxy was fitted with the 115 bhp engine and although very good at towing i found it to be just a little underpowered so i swapped it for a seat alhambra tdi 130, its the same engine but with bhp and loads more torque it is truly outstanding as a towcar, very very sure footed excellent brakes masses of towing power and round about 35 mpg with the van on tow, 50 plus mpg solo with a steady foot. also look at the vw sharan which is identical but with a lot less kit than the seat. I know all the purists will say that you are towing too near the 100% mark but i have many many miles of towing experiance and will lay money on it that the alhambra is a safer tow car than my old disco and at the end of the day seat have warranted the car as safe to tow up to 2000kgs. another very good mpv is the renault espace, i drove a 2.2 dci grand espace the other week and it was very nice indeed and the prices have come down a lot this year. lookers in stockport have an ex demo grand espace dynamique in stock for 17999 and it only has 5000 miles on the clock (05 plate). personally i dont like the interior on the kia mpv but some say its an allright tow car and the toyota mpv has a stupid low tow limit of 1600 kgs as does the crysler voyager so both are no good to you. if you are looking for new then vw and ford are both replacing the galaxy / sharan very soon so it might be worth waiting and seat now fit the 2.0 tdi to the sx and stylance models so even more power and torque. any further help just ask.
I would second that. They come at a very reasonable price tooBrian,
have a look at the Kia Sedona 2.9 deisel MPV
kerb weight 2220 kg
max braked tow 2000kg
max nose wieght 80 kg
2.9 common rail 140 bhp
prices 16,750 -- 21,150
I have the Sorento myself and have found after sales very good.
good luck TONY A>
Hi EileenBrian(and anyone else considering buying an Espace),PLEASE IGNORE all comments advising that the maximum towing weight of the Espace is 2000kg. This figure only applies to DRIVER ONLY.In other words if there is anyone else in the car besides the driver,or you have the car heavily loaded this figure DOES NOT APPLY. I own an Espace and have confirmed this with Renault UK.The handbook states that in any quote "other situation" a lower limit applies:2.0 16v -1350kg/ 1.9dci - 1500kg/ 2.0T,3.5V6,2.2dci,3.0d V6 - 1550kg. These limits are too low to tow most large caravans but we are happy to compromise on our caravan because we like Renaults. Hope you find this information useful EILEEN
Hi Chris, Yes I am sure that the maximum towing weight braked for the 3.0dV6 is 1550kg - it is in black and white on page 6.06 of my handbook! If you want to be sure forget the dealers - I asked for towing figures before I bought my Espace and was greeted with blank expressions - go to www.renault.co.uk and contact them for confirmation, that is what I did. I was worried about towing too much and coming unstuck if I had to make a claim on my insurance. We tow with the 2.0T Auto which has the following figures MAX GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT 4,050KG MAX TOWING WEIGHT 1,550KG MAX ALL UP WEIGHT OF CAR 2,490KG KERB WEIGHT 1,710KG. The difference between the maximum all up weight and kerb weight is 780kg, so 2 adults, 2 kids and all of the usual stuff is unlikely to reach that figure - even if you did all eat too many mince pies at Christmas!! I stress that these figures only apply to my model, but they should give you an idea of the capacity of the Espace. All of these figures came from the Vehicle Identification Plate which your dealer should be able to point out on the car you are looking at buying - I tried asking dealers for information on what all of the different figures meant and guess what...yep, more blank expressions(they were more interested in trying to get me to pick which colour of car I wanted).Note the figures down and do the calculations yourself. We tow an Abbey GTS Vogue 415 Year 2000 with an MTPLM of 1330kg which our Espace pulls with ease. One point to note is that all Espaces have a permissible nose weight of only 80kg, consequently our front locker has the bear minimum in it. As a car I can thoroughly recommend the Espace. We looked at all of the MPV's on the market and decided nothing could compete with the Espace for comfort, style and spec - 18 months later and we still feel the same. Hope all this helps Eileen.Hi Eileen
We are just in the process of buying an Espace 3.0d v6 and are trying to confirm that the information given is correct i.e. 1550kg as the renault dealer was unsure! Do you interpt this as being a car with 2 adults, 2 children and the usual stuff in car. Can you let me know what caravan you have to assist in our choice.
Interestingly in the 2005 towcar awards this car manages to win its category but only after renualt gave permission to go to 85% of its weight 1607Kgs
Any other info out there would be helpful before I part with my money
Thanks

Eileen, I tow with a Scenic 2, also had this problem with the towing weights. I contacted Renault Customer Services on 08000 723372, this was after reading about the problem in one of the caravan mags in August 04, they assured me that the figure to look at is the "Max Train Weight" and "so long as this figure is not exceeded you are within the Renault recommendations for towing safley and within the vehicle's capabilities" And they sent me a letter to keep in the vehicle handbook in case I ever need to explain it to the gentlman opperating the weighbridge, or indeed any insurance company.I also contacted Renault again today, after reading your posts and they confirmed they still stand by the letter!Brian(and anyone else considering buying an Espace),PLEASE IGNORE all comments advising that the maximum towing weight of the Espace is 2000kg.
