Although having caravans, tents, trailer tents, van conversion and yes even a static at one point over the last 36 yrs, including a 10yr slot going to florida, getting a dog forced us to settle down, so now we are back to caravanning again. Our outfit is a 53 Kia Sedona 2.9 CRDi and a Compass Rallye 2000 Special Edition.
Our previous 3 caravans had the usual parralel front seating/bed arrangement but this one is an 'L' shape arrangement which I've almost got used to now, it gives a proper lounge feeling with the fire on an angle facing you.
The only problem I have with this van so far is the safety aspect of that the cooker is right beside the door which is a recipe for disaster if young ones are about. Fortunately it is usually only my husband and I are using it right now, but I shudder when I think of what could happen if the cooker top is being used and children are around. How has this occured with H&S being so prevelent?
Another thought occurred yesterday when sitting outside the van having a cuppa. Normally we put up the porch awning but as it was so windy when we arrived at our site on Friday evening we just didn't bother. I noticed the veents next to the door, one was obviously the fridge vent, the other my husband said was just an air vent, hmmmm I think it was a cooker vent. Now being a logical thinker, hence my user name of lucylogic, it got me thinking of the fumes that are coming out of these vents when using gas (usually because there are no EHU's available) or you are going self contained.
These fumes are now going into the awning when that is attached to your van, surely that is lethal !!!! And what about the people sleeping in the awning, surely not a good mix.
We've all heard stories of accidents and fatalities in awnings, caravans and tents so how has this been allowed to happen. I would welcome any advice from experts in this field,
I can't be the only person to think of these 2 problems surely.
For the record I think PM to be the best mag around and have bought it for quite a number of years now. Keep up the good work and the great advice you give.

Hello Lucy, welcome to the Practical Caravan forum
smiley-laughing.gif

You've obviously had a wide range of camping / caravanning experience over the years so I hope that you will enjoy using the forum to share tips and ideas, and of course gossip.
It is possible to by child safety cooker protector guards if you feel that the position of the stove presents a danger to small children, another solution might be to leave the bottom half of the caravan door shut with the top half opento slow children down when they are entering the caravan.
It's unusual for the fridge vent to be on the awning side of the caravan, ours is on the nearside opposite the awning, so it might be a good idea to ask on the General message board where your point will be seen by more forum members.
I know that some caravan sites have rules which prohibit people from sleeping in the awning, perhaps this is one of the reasons?

Thank you for your welcome Parksy. I am sure to get a wealth of advice from the forum, I know I get it from the magazine already, but the forum goes that further mile : )

Practical Caravan magazine have described this website and forum as the online voice of the magazine so it's good to know that you enjoy the magazine Lucy. (nice photo b.t.w.) The editorial staff look in on the forum from time to time and they often submit items to the rest of the website which don't appear in Practical Caravan mag.

Hi Lucy, Welcome to the forum. I'm with Parksy on the cooker guard although I use the stable door and keep my grandchildren out of the van and in the awning when cooking, as even though our cooker is not by the door there isn't much space to get past it in the van. Our fridge vent opens into the awning and warm air comes out of it, presumably from cooling the fridge. However this is usually on EHU, very rarely run it on gas. Never thought of there being a CO risk, but I suppose a CO detector in the awning wouldn't be a bad plan if you are running the fridge on gas.
