Hi

We purchased our first caravan last week, a Bailey Pageant Champagne 2005 and are looking forward to our first outing. We have put a couple of posts on the site and got some very valuable info, so would like to say thank you. I also have a couple more questions, seeing as we are brand new to all this. How often would you use caravan leveller blocks, is it worth buying a set? Gas bottles, do they each have to have a regulator? To seasoned caravanners these questions must be obvious, but to newbies they are not. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Hi Dave and Gill, welcome to the forum and congratulations on buying your first caravan

Never worry about asking what may seem like 'obvious' questions, we were all new caravanners once and your fellow forum members are always happy to share advice, tips, knowledge and gossip.
Levelling ramps are essential, look for a pair of sturdy ramps because sooner or later you'll pitch uo on a sloping site or an uneven grass pitch and you'll be glad of them. Always aim to tow up the levelling ramp rather than reverse onto it if possible, this is so that you can apply the handbrake while still hitced to the towcar and the brake overrun mechanism will not have engaged as it does when reversing. The overrun can sometimes prevent the handbrake from operating fully and the elevated caravan wheel could roll back down the ramp.
I find one of these three way spirit levels useful, I place it on the worktop just inside the caravan door to check for side to side and fore and aft level.
Your Bailey Pageant should have a bulkhead regulator and pigtail fitted, look inside the front gas locker on the bulkhead and you should see it. Click Here to read more about pigtails and which is which. Are there any lpg gas cylinders already with the caravan? The red ones are propane and the blue are butane, propane is best in all temperatures because butane lpg remains in it's liquid form and won't work in colder weather. Butane and propane use different types of pigtail ( the hose between the gas bottle and the regulator is a pigtail).

Thank you Parksy, there is an empty butane one in the front which we are going to change for the same size propane and we have a nearly full bottle on our BBQ at home which we will also put in, we will need to set about finding a set of levellers now then as when we bought the caravan there was nothing in it.

Hi ..... I would recomend a pair of these rather than a pair that go up in just three set heights .... we were once on a bad pitch & when i put the van wheel on the chock it started to sink, so i coupled them together to spread the weight better & did not have a problem... they both stay in my front locker just in case one is needed....

Welcome Dave n Gill.

Levellers are important. However where you place the spirit level is crucial. Most caravan fridges are level sensitive. Trial and error will determine the best point for you.
Enjoy your Bailey.

Welcome to the forum. We always keep a pair of Milenco levellers in our front locker, along with four squares of wood to put under the steadies to stop them sinking into soft ground. You can buy them, but we cut four from a piece of wood, which didn't cost us anything and they work just as well.
