How far in advance do you need to book?

I have looked through a couple of sites now and seen people have already booked their breaks in their van well in advance.

What I am asking is would we have to book say a break away in the 6 weeks school hols well in advance or would there be pitches still available? Say the week/fortnight before?

My partner weekends so we'll be looking for breaks between the Sunday and Thursday rather than weekends.

I really don't want to have to book things too far in advance as my sons have special needs and we have appointments thrown at us with not much notice.

I book as late as possible as my life seems to be directed by family stuff plus I don't like wasting time and cash on a wet week in a windy field.

As commercial sites take a deposit, when they are fully booked they realy are fully booked, but as CC sites don't request a deposit there are often cancellations available.

Examples:-

CC club site at Baltic Wharf Bristol is often booked solid according to the web site, I phoned the site last sat ( B/H weekend) and booked for Sun - Wed due to cancellations.

Similar situation at the CC site at Tredegar house south Wales, I booked 4 days in advance of spring B/H although the web site said full.

One of my favorite commercial sites in Cornwall, Trewince near Padstow has an overflow field with no electric, so I know I can just turn up and if there are no hook up pitches I can always use the overflow.

Conversly another great site in Cornwall I use in low season has no overflow and often gets booked solid months in advance especially in high season.

In summary I don't think there are hard and fast rules as it depends on the sort of site you want. After the bad summer last year and less cash swilling around you may find there are more spaces available last minute this summer.

That's great, very reassuring. Thank you for your reply. Just one little further question, the sites with no hook up, do they let you use your own generator?

(Just we're considering buying on for the private events my partner goes to so that could open opportunities for cheaper/overflow sites)

I'm afraid I don't know about generators having never used one, you'd probably have to contact the site.

Of course if you are on a non hook up the site fee will be reduced so some of the savings could be spent on a spare battery.

I've added a couple of links below. I use Trewince.

The camping and caravan club have a big non hook up field for club use during the summer at Higher harlyn at vastly reduced charges, a nieghbour of mine goes there. They may do similar things at other sites around the country, but at the low rates they seem to charge at the site the cost of joining the club would be lost in the savings.

Thanks again for your reply. We measured the other leisure battery we have (a huge one my partner had for his college project) and that will fit inside a cubby hole in the floor of the new car, so we could always take that aswell. I'll certainly be looking around and considering pitches without hook ups now I know that fits.
