I often travel well in excess of 1000 miles per week and so filling up at motorway services is an inevitable necessary evil as I have neither the time or inclination to exit the motorway in a quest for cheaper fuel, and so of course, I expect to pay higher prices. However, this afternoon, I filled up at Gloucester services M5 Southbound, and thought the cashier had selected the wrong pump when he asked for payment, but then I realised why ...

Diesel @ 151.9p per litre ! :woohoo:

And that was just the regular stuff. I have no idea what the allegedly “superior” stuff would have weighed in at ! :p

Can anyone top this ? ...

Gladly I can’t top it, but our local garages regularly charge around 12-15 pence more for premium diesel. Over the summer I’ve been travelling to Wigston in Leicestershire where a local BP is selling Ultimate diesel at just 5 pence over the regular BP diesel. At 137.9 per litre for Ultimate it’s verging on a bargain as around here that’s almost standard diesel price. When I mentioned the good price to the owner he told me that BP recommend a difference of 5 pence per litre which is what he charges. Reckoned it is a good seller too. I don’t think I have filled up in Wiltshire since mid June as the cars got a good range so I can treat it to Ultimate bought 110 miles from home :)

Having an Esso station near us and just off the motorway it is noticeable that many truck drivers have cottoned on to the fact that they can save over 10p a liter at 134.9 with just a short diversion. if you have a 500 liter tank then you can see why they do it.
The supermarkets around here vary up to 6p off the Esso prices, so motorists tend to use them.

If you are a Costco member, and if your local Costco has a petrol station; ours is generally at least a penny a litre cheaper than the cheapest local supermarket.

The only time I've ever filled up with 'Premium' diesel was when I drove to the only empty pump, realised that this was all it sold and couldn't be bothered to move over to a different part of the forecourt and wait in a queue. From memory I think it cost about 5p a litre more than standard.

It was close to Christmas and probably cold, but if anything the fuel consumption increased and I noticed no difference in performance to speak of.

I get the same fuel consumption but as BP say 29 miles more per tank. Don’t know the size of tank being referred to but my range can be 650 miles so a variation of 29 miles is neither here nor there. Also can’t say I’ve noticed any better performance but since I don’t tend to spend time on drag strips that again would be difficult to measure. Engine dies run more smoothly though. Main benefits to me are the better detergent content and much reduced ash content.

My wife filled up the Shogun with the Prem diesel by accident. Car was nearly empty, I nearly collapsed at the price which was around £14 dearer than normal for a full tank.

What price per litre was that at ? How large is the tank then? If it’s the 69 litre capacity then 20p extra per litre for premium is pushing it. Or do you normally use supermarket fuel and this time filled with branded premium?

Most hauliers don’t actually pay pump prices - they negotiate a better price with fuel suppliers and pay by fuel card
