HYUNDAI TERRACAN CHEAP 4X4

We have recently purchased a second hand terracan limited it was 11 months old and had lost over £9000 i have always been a landrover man but then got a company x-trail (a very capable suv)got bored and went for a 53plate discovery unfortunatly i found myself getting stuck more often than not down the farm i could have changed tyres etc but decided to try a w reg 3.0ltd isuzu trooper excellent unfortunatly the gearbox was begining to mess about it had done over 100k so i chopped it in for the hyundai terracan limited £9000 + the old trooper i have to say it tows very very well its capable off road, full leather,roof mounted dvd player,tinted windows etc the only problem is the fake plastic walnut dash and the ride is a little hard but if you want a 4x4 that tows well 2.8 tons and is very capable off road at a realistic price then have a look at these.

I can make the same observations regarding the Daihatsu Fourtrack I have - it is far more basic than the Hyundai but by God it does it job well and is a brilliant tow car. I have often thought of going for an X Trail but then thought I would only be spending money for the sake of it and would not get very much in part ex. for the Fourtrack so have decided to run the car into the ground unless Ernie smiles fortunately for me.

I've heard that the Terracan is effectively the Mitsubishi Shogun from two/three generations back - that's actually not a bad pedigree.

Ive only heard good things about these and they are certainly terrific value. Most of the criticisms seem to be that they are a bit agricultural and handle in the old style way.

This won't bother you of course if you are using the car as a towing tool and not a fashion statement, a five year transferrable warranty from new is also a big influence for many.

Hi graham the book say's 32mpg combined but i would say its not far off, although urban is only 26mpg,and on a run you will be looking at 38mpg. I forgot to add that i also got a tow pack with twin electrics, 1st service and road tax in on the deal so thats a lot of car and extras for 13k on a 56 reg, they must be desperate to sell them,

I saw one on a rally in November last year, got to agree with you they aint the best looking car.

I had been looking at the Santa Fe. The pre 06 model only comes in at a little over 1600 kgs with 2.0 ltr engine giving 109 bhp, & the post 06 model 1750 kgs with 2.2 ltr engine giving 130 bhp.

Since my van grosses at 1600kgs I am loath to have the pre 06 & the post 06 is still on the expensive side.

Hi graham the terracan (plastic pig) has 161bhp but i do belive it is less on the earlier models, somthing to check if looking or test driving the pig

I would imagine that all the Terracans (old & new) would be more than capable of handling my van

Hi Lee and Yvette. We bought a 2 year old Terror in August last year to tow our Coachman Laser 650/4,twin axle. It was one of a limited number of tow vehicles that were still in our price range that would legally pull over 1800kg and still return decent mpg. Chuffed to death with it! Newquay to Castleford (360 miles) in 7 hours including a halfhour lunch,n loo stop. The full way on one tank with a bit left over - worked out at 24 mpg. They may be old fashioned and a not quite the flavour of the month with J.C. and his Top Gear buddies ( a brilliant show, incidentally) but at

I too believed the Terracan was related to the 90s Shogun as I have seen Hyundai versions of Shoguns abroad, however when you see a Terracan close up they seem to be quite a bit smaller than the old Shogun - I am sure there is some Shogun in there though.

We always found our old Shogun a good tow car.

I have bitten the bullett & ordered a Terracan
