Today i renewed my caravan insurance , before doing so i read my booklet and discovered that if the caravan came off, the caravan insures would not be liable , it would come off the car insurance as a third party thing. Then damage to caravan i suppose would come under the caravan insures.

Robert, as I understand it, when towing the van is covered for 3rd Party risk only.

Therefore if it parts company from the tow car and hits someone else, their damage would be taken up by your insurance.

The van, probably a write off by now, would be covered by your own van insurance, if you have any of course.

However, as having separate van insurance is not a legal requirement, I pity anyone, who finds themselves in a position of having a multi thousand pound van destroyed and no replacement policy in place.

Slight edit ,,No I dont pity them, they should hav taken that into consideration in the first place.

Robert - You are correct that any third party liability for a trailer/caravan should be covered by the tow vehicles insurance but it is worth checking the policy.

In todays cut throat competition of reducing car insurance premiums I have noticed that it is one of many items that are removed to lessen the cost as the majority of motorists don't want/need it.

Thanks for remarks folks,i checked with my car insurance and you are right it has the third party bit in it.I also said i renewed the insurance yesterday but only after contacting CC & CCC. I am with Lifesure through MCIA brokers and have had them for few years but as CC were much dearer and CCC did not reply until this morning i went with Lifesure only to find CCC done an even better quote. To cancel i would have to pay a cancellation charge.
