...Sgt Peppers was released, obviously. just wondered what some of the more, shall we say experienced (?!?) forum members opinions are of this seminal album - whether it really did change music forever, or was it just severely overrated...

being just a young thing myself ;0) I wasn't born at the time, so interested in your recollections of the "swinging sixties". Mark (",)

More a child of the seventies than the sixties, despite being born in the fifties, I suppose I really only caught the latter end of the Beatles era, but what I saw of them left me singularly unimpressed. They may well have been trailblasers in their earlier days but that didn`t mean they were overly talented.

I know people will be horrified/disagree/want me shot but only really Macca (early Wings stuff) and Harrison did anything at all for me. I regard Lennon as over-rated as Oasis. Ringo who?

Oh sorry.

Sgt Peppers. No thanks. More a compilation of individual projects that a cohesive collection, and as with other bands since who did similar things before splitting, it doesn`t work.

(A `contract obligation` album)

I have to agree with Angus, totally overated band in my opinion.

Now Pink Floyd thats another story, Dark Side of the Moon has got to be one of the few albums which has stood the test of time.

I'm glad you two have posted your thoughts, I was too chicken to go first.

Although I didn't listen to Sgt Peppers till mid 70's I thought it was dross. Hippy/lsd music to my mind.

Now, AC/DC (with Bon Scott) were a far superior band in my opinion.

Dark Side of the Moon? Definately!

And most other stuff played by Alan Freeman for those fortunate to hear him during the seventies and eighties.

I tnink that you are all missing the point regarding music be it classical or pop. There are good and bad pieces of music around. The Beatles composed and recorded some very good music, however some of their music was better recorded by other artists eg Michelle (The Overlanders), Those Were the Days (Mary Hopkins) etc. Likewise The Rolling Stones, Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, Robbie Williams, George Michael, etc., and even the more modern artists have produced some fine music. There is also a lot of rubbish around and that not only relates to modern music but from time gone by. On a similar vane there is some very good ballet and opera music which has been around for many years as well as the modern day musicals in the West End theatres. Therefore it is not only the piece of music but also how it was performed, therefore in my opinion it is whether the artist is good or bad but how they have interpretated and performed a piece of music that should be judged.

I agree entirely, Colin, and thats how I have judged them.

The `success` of an artist isn`t necessarily related to their ability or talent.

How many times did you hear of a single or album forecast to go straight in at number one before its even been heard???(based on pre-ordered sales)

I can honestly say I`ve never bought music (for myself) without hearing it first.

Never bought a car or caravan without seeing it first either.

If you`ve got one iota of commonsense you just wouldn`t, maybe the fact that so many do (music) speaks volumes (!) for our society and how easily led and manipulated some people are. If its by Robbie etc, it must be brilliant. NOT.

Personally I quite liked the Beatles but Sgt Pepper was no better or worse than their other records.

Better still and there must be some who would agree that the best then and still now are Status Quo.

And what about Elvis "the king" presley, to say his voice was feeble was understating it, he got by purely on his looks, because he certainly could not sing, in my opinion and I stress my opinion. Or should that be ours!

Hi,

I was there.Since then I have listened to, Bought the Music, and seen most of the following :

Rolling Stones,Frank Zappa,Donovan,AC/DC,Black Sabbath,Deep Purple,Quo,Queen,Abba,Nolan Sisters,Floyd,Clannad, to name but a few.I agree with a survey among recording engineers, prominent recording artists and djs which was done in 2001.The result of which was on the telly at the time. The result was Sargeant Pepper was the greatest album of the 20th century. And if you want to know the greatest guitarist,Jimi.Oh and the greatest drummer, why Ginger Baker of course. And the best group, well that's a tough one.And the best solo singer must be Frank Sinatra

I thoughts it has been agreed from the posts that The Beatles were garbage and seriously over-rated?

I had thought that it was not just coincidence that I had found similar minded people on a caravan forum and being into caravanning.

I often feel people won't be honest and say they don't like The Beatles as their over hpye has has made it unfashionable not to like them and they dont want to seen as different.

SPG, since when had it been "agreed" that the Beatles were garbage?? people have expressed opinions, some have said that they dont like the Beatles - doesn't make it a majority. or do we all have to agree with you???

Brave-Fart - my opening comment was an observation/question based on reading the tone of the responses made to your original posting. I did not in this comment express an opinion but simply an observation. However in your opening post you requested opinions.

Beleived for once that I had found some folks who would openly admit to not liking The Beatles. From the defensive nature of your response you clearly do. To which you are entitled, but like you state not everyone has to agree.

In my final comment I again passed an observation - try asking people who claim they like The Beatles if they actually own a copy of any of their material.

Reading between the lines of my response, although I did not directly state this, I am willing to admit openly that I do not like them.

Regards to spg comments,to overate something should surely mean it will come to nothing and fade into oblivion wihtout a second thought ie the sinclair c5 or the massively overrated millenium dome only time can justify their talent or if they are over hyped, and if you look at the effect the beatles still have in the commercial world im sure not even you, could not ignore their eternal popularity regardless of your own dislike for them

As I previously stated, in my opinion, The Beatles have written some very good music and the orchestral interpretation of their music is well worth listening to. Whether you like them or not their name and music will go down in history as composers and performers of note. I will admit I do like their music and in many instances their way of presenting it, although some of their music have had greater sucess whilst performed by other artists. On saying that there are many other artists in the pop music world who I like eg Pat Boone, Andy Williams, Jim Reeves, Cliff Richard, Rolling Stones, etc to name but a handful.

Jim - history has shown that many "popular" atrists can achieve longevity without being conidered as quality artists. This has continued over the decades, The Sex Pistols and The Spice girls being more recent examples. How many people buy a newspaper or magazine because Posh Spice is on the cover - and what musical genius has she displayed since the Spice Girls split up?

Pop music is mostly purchased by the teenage age group and as we all like to re-live our youth from time to time it is easy for "impact" to continue. The Beatles were simply the favoured boy band of their day - mainly beacuse there was very limited alternative for young people who had more freedom after the 40's and 50's from other UK atrists.

This holds true for other industries as well - unfortunately British Leyland has a terrible reputation for producing quality products in the 60's and 70's but there are still owners clubs for these cars. Similar for Lada's.
