Jocky wheel handle problems

The first time this happened was on a German autobahn and it was very hairy stopping, what happened was the handle unwound down to impact the road. Last week it happened again and in each time i put bungie straps around it from turning, does any body have this problem?.

Did you put the straps round the handle or the wheel brackets? If you put them round the handle, it would still be possible for the wheel to unwind if you didn't ensure that the brackets on either side of the wheel weren't properly slotted into the slots on the sleeve that the jockey-wheel assembly winds into.

Hi Eddie, yes i did put the straps on to the handle and to stop it turning i wound some electrical tape to stop it slipping, as for the slots ,they were in correctly, still wondering why.

Shouldn't need bungee straps. When you wind up the wheel, make sure the sideplates which hold the wheel are in the two slots at the bottom of the main tube. Wind up the wheel to the top of these slots and get it tight. Then undo the clamp and retract the whole leg to the travel position. So long as you don't use excessive force, this thould prevent the handle from unscrewing and allowing the wheel to drop.

Robert, was it just the wheel and screwed spindle that dropped, or was it the complete jockey-wheel? I had a situation last year when my complete jockey wheel dropped onto the road whilst travelling, and I know that I had previously secured it up as much as I dared, without risking damage to the screw-handle.It turned out to be caused by an over-enthusiastic service mechanic with his can of grease. I took the complete j/w assembly off, cleaned the whole thing thoroughly with petrol, and it seems to be holding ok now.

Thanks Eddie/Ray , i have done all what has been mentioned, thing is it does not happen all the time so the bungie straps only go on when it happens.
