Labour charges

Do you think that £103 labour charge to

fit a gas BBQ point is excessive?

We were quoted £149 for a £32 item fitted

and £99 for a 240v outside socket that cost £12.99!

When I questioned it they said it's a two hour job for each item!!

If as i assume the work requires cutting through the side wall, and maintaining your damp guarantee, if applicable, using a qualified electrician, or gas safe fitter, which may not be the case, but they will have liabilities with any work carried out, plus the overheads that have to be covered.

Then the charges are reasonable.

However if the socket or gas point are surface mounted only, then maybe not.

Phil do you think adding 40% to the purchase price of an item is acceptable?Perhaps items bought at trade may be different but surely not items bought with no discount.

yes, as a business i would have various administration costs. Perhaps spending time buying the parts, storing them, even delivering. I may be having to purchase parts upfront which add a cost to my business.... some one has to pay it and im afraid thats the customer.

Next time you go to a restaurant ask them how much the ingredients cost and then ask them what the markup is.... it usually starts at about 60%.

Yeah Phil but the food industry is not the caravan industry,remember the price you pay for your meal on the table includes the cooking time,various other costs etc.But anyway good luck to you,good way to think pal.

Its not clear what you have been quoted and what it includes, but as a rough estimate it should take an experienced fitter only about a maximum of an hour to fit a BBQ gas point, providing all parts and tools are to hand.

As for mark ups, again it is difficult to be accurate with the figures you give, because I don't know if the

the difference is if you want a qualified person, with the correct documentation ie ACoPS, who will do the job correctly, to the correct standards and without invalidating the manufactures warranty and no body leaks after, you have to pay a bit more. the dealer has overheads to meet, not including the considerable cost of sending technicians on the courses for mains and gas safety.

an industry norm time for each job should be between 1hr - 1.5hrs

If it were me I`d fit them myself and then get the work checked out

I don't know where the 35% or even 60% to 200% mark up figures came from, but in the car industry the rule of thumb for spare parts is that, with few high volume exceptions such as normal wear and tear items which are sold in relatively high volumes, their retail price is roughly 10 times the manufacturing price.
