Q why do the cc recomend a fully laden caravan to be only 85% of the kerbweight of the towing vehicle? my van has a mtplm of 1660 yet the kerbweight is 1600 on my vehicle which has a fantastic bmw turbo diesel engine and discs allround. when i load my car up with wife and 2 kids plus roofbox and fishing tackle this increases my weight by around 200kgs for somebody to reach the exact amount of mtplm you would have to weigh every single item that you load .i load my van to around 93% but when you put your passengers in, in effect your kerbweight increases i never have any problems towing my van only on grass when its wet!!!!!!!!! i am also acheiving 34 mpg with my little 3 series bmw

The way the weight ratio is calculated is to cover the worst case condition, so that anything else can only be better. Besides, it is only a recommendation and there's not to stop you from going right up to the maximum permitted towing limit, which may be well in excess of 85%. If you are happy with towing at 93%, so be it. I am currently towing at around 98 to 99%.

UK-built caravans are best considered at MTPLM because that approximates to the actual laden state they're towed in. If everyone actually weighed the contents of their caravan, many would be shocked to find they actually exceed their MTPLM.

Towcars are considered at kerbweight as it's constant for a specific vehicle. Actual laden weight varies considerably.
