Just booked my first ever caravan site holiday, for my first ever touring experience.

I've booked Lady Margarets Park, at Chirk North Wales for a few days in May to learn how to set-up my brand new van. I'm not giving the date - don't want an audience for you all to come and laugh at me **** up everything from erecting the awning to connecting the services.

Does anyone have any comments about the site? Suppose I should have asked before booking.

Also what are the approach roads like, I'll be travelling up from the midlands probably via Oswetsry - I don't want to meet anthing coming in the opposite direction on a single track road!

Thanks

Hi Timothy,

Welcome to a brilliant hobby caravanning.Don't really know the caravan park you are going ,but know very well the roads you will be using and Oswestry is a doddle.

FIRST and foremost please remember we have all been in your situation ie;first time out,yes of course we have all made ****-ups some big ones.its a matter of doing a bit of team work and keeping calm, don't worry about people watching they;re just reminescing on the cockups they made.If you do get really stuck just ask someone to help you,no one will refuse to help,no one will laugh at you, there,s always someone on site who will be more than willing to get set up ok,just don,t be afraid to ask even the warden will help, and the same as everything practice makes perfect and take your time always.Enjoy your caravaning we're a great lot of people always there for each other.Best Wishes Jim.

Hi Timothy

Lady Margaret's Park is a good site to start with. The approach roads are fine so no problem there. Once there, you will have a choice of pitch - some more open or an area in the 'dell' which is more wooded, but also darker. Rabbits frequently run around which is nice if you have children.

The facilities of showers etc., outside washing up areas are very clean and will give you a good idea of the standard of Caravan Club sites in general.

There are some nice walks from the site along the canal, and Llangollen is about 6 miles away which has the river, steam train, canal boat rides etc. and a good supermarket.

If there are any more questions please do ask, but do enjoy your holiday. It takes a few days with a new van to get to know it and how best to use the storage and the space, so take your time and change things if necessary. Don't be surprised if you have a few arguments, especially if you are erecting an awning!!!!

You won't regret your decision as there is scope for much enjoyment ahead.

Best wishes

Chris

Hi

We have stopped at the site a few times, the last time about 3 years ago. My family live not far away. Its a lovely site, usual cc standards. You will need your levelling blocks for some pitches as the site does slope. Its was our first site, several years ago. The wardens were really helpful, showed hubby how to connect to the hook up and gave some helpful tips.

You can walk into Chirk from the site. Llangollen is lovely, there are also a number of pubs in the area that do food if you want to eat out. If you are into Indian food, there is/ was an Indian restaurant on the main road in Chirk, as you turn off the main road for the site, food and service was good. There is also National Trust properties in the area, at Chirk and Erdding outside of Wrexham, both worth a visit. Wrexham has a range of shopping including large supermarkets etc.

Remember, we all have to learn, a change of caravan means that even the most experienced have to learn about their new caravan, how it behaves etc. Take your time and don't be afraid to ask for help. Enjoy your trip. Annette

Hi Timothy - Welcome to the open life we enjoy when caravanning. and don't think too much about pitching till you get there. I have often had nightmares before entering into an unknown activity and when the first experience is over you will say to yourself "what was I worrying about" My good wishes to you and yours in your new adventure and remember drive safely and be aware at all times of the caravan haters.

The approach from Oswestry is good and just follow the CC directions to the site.Only bit to watch is over the Railway/Canal bridge where you have to be aware of any on coming traffic. Some nice walks around the area especially if the weather is dry. Also if you like the Birds, feathered variety, look skyward on occasion and you will most likely see soaring Buzzards. TV reception in parts is dismal, try to get a clear line away, from trees, with your aerial pointing in the Chocolate factory direction for reception. You will pass the Choc Factory on the approach. You can visit Chirk castle which is approx 1.5miles from the site. If you have a dog, don't be tempted to walk there as they are not allowed. Only found this out when we where 100 yrds from the Castle and saw the only no Dogs sign!!!!! Rest is usual CC standard. Couple of pubs in Chirk, 10-15mn walk. One seems to do Poker/Roulette tournaments most of the time!!!! The Hand does meals which are just ok but nothing special. There's an Indian Restaurant accross from the Hand which is ok.

Have a nice stay, Brian

Hi

We stayed at the Chirk site in May last year for a long weekend (6 nights). It a lovely quite park with well spaced pitches and excellent access. When you've set up, have a look round the castle grounds; they are beautiful. If you are cyclists, there is a 110km ride starting from nearby Ellesmere that we did last year in May going down to Wellington and coming back through Shrewsbury. You really get a taste for the local scenery on a bicycle. Have a great time but what ever you do, don't forget the red wine and REAL glasses (keep them in the box for transit so they don't break)- good wine deserves glasses made of glass not plasticky ones!

Nice site and as I recall from a few years ago you could get maps with circular walks available from the site.

it really is a good site for a beginner, easy to get to, local attractions, decent beer/food within a reasonable distance with walking and NT properties readily available.

A grotty site with dirty facilities miles from nowhere isn`t the best way to start out and can cloud the judgement of anyone unsure of `this caavanning lark`.
