I have a friend with a manual 's' and he says its a fine car for towing his van at nearly 1500kg. He likes the ride comfort and genaral handling which are far better that his prevoius FL1, but he feels that mpg at 33-37mpg solo could be better. He was thinking of the new stop-start model but decided against tarding his in as S-S would only help in haevy traffic and his journeys are mainly rural. One other point have a look at Freelander 2 video clips on YOuTube, awesome!

I had GS Auto (had the sports kit fitted with 19inch wheels) for a little while and its was a very capable tow car.

Dont go for the S spec at its so basic and doesn't get Terrain Response , go for XS or HSE as you get the best specs. Dealers may argue the GS is best value , thats only because they've got shed loads of them.

Only reason I changed was because it was too short on leg room for me (got long legs!!) so needed something with more room up front. Also dont go for Black - another issue for me - as it seem to show scratches more. Apparently the paint is now water based and thinner so will show surface scratches from washing more.

I have an Auto GS and Black too. Only ever have black or white vehicles and the white Freelander is gruesome albeit the only one without metallic paint surcharge !

My main LR dealer actually sells more GS's, than other variants, so there is a longer waiting list. I must admit that the S is too basic but I couldn't justify the cost of the extra 'toys' on the XS or HSE (SE now discontinued).

Awesome towing car though and no complaints except perhaps economy.
