i have had 3 broadband on my laptop for a year and 10 months , and as i will be out of the country from mid December until late Januuary ,and i was going to give a months notice ,any way so i wrote to them saying as i will not be in the country ,i wish my contract to end with you at the end of its term ,and they wrote back saying that it would cost £17.46 to cancel early , so i called them ,and said i did not want to cancel early ,and they said you will have cancel it on the 23/12/09 ,i said i wont be here thats why i am giving you 2 months notice instead of one , they said you cant it has to be one months notice as per your agreement, can you imagine what it would cost calling them from spain going through lots of options before i get to talk to any one and surley 2 months is better than one , and 2 days before christmas it probabley would not be dealt with until after the year

I can remember, just, when you could write a letter and you would get a polite reply saying thank you.

But now you have to ring premium rate telephone numbers which are designed to keep you on the line as long as possible and speak to someone you can't understand.

I think it's called progress.

We had huge problems with 3, cancelling my son's phone contract - which was already outside of the 'signed up for' period, ie about eighteen months of a 'one year' contract! We wanted to give a month's notice. My OH spent 52 minutes on the phone trying desperately to persuade 'James' (who was probably from east of the Indian ocean) that we didn't want to renew, or change the terms, or extend the contract, or buy some credit, or any one of a million other options he kept offering. In the end we asked to speak to a supervisor, and he tried to do exactly the same thing.

After further heated conversation my OH just said 'End the contract now, as requested, at the end of next month, I will pay no more, and I am taking this to my solicitor in the morning'! They wrote ending the contract, but still tried to extract a further month's payment (after the one month notice period).

Horrible company - but probably just the same as all the other mobile providers once they've got you locked into a contract. I notice they never write to you to say, "Your contract has ended, do you want to renew.....?"

Chris - have you tried the following website:

http://www.saynoto0870.com/
You just type in the premium rate number, or company name, and it will, almost always, provide you with a geographical (ordinary) telephone number.

If you're on BT Anytime (inclusive local and national rate calls) there's nothing more annoying than having to pay for a premium rate call but that website provides the solution!

It's also nice to think you've managed to avoid their money-making scam!!

Whatever you do, keep everything in writing and keep hold of your bills for up to 3 years after you have cancelled the contract. Go to the threads regarding "3" at http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/index.php for more information.

When giving notice, make sure you send it registered mail. If they refuse to cancel, contact trading standards through Consumer Direct at http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

I had an interesting different experience. I had taken out an 18 month Orange "broadband dongle" contract whilst on holiday 18 months ago. I received a telephone call a few weeks ago from Orange asking if I wanted to renew the contract at half the cost which I have as although I do not use it extensively I would probably have left it running at the old level until I got round to reassessing the best deal at some time in the future.
