For all of you with a late model Shogun (up to 2014), I have just received an urgent safety recall in the post this morning concerning both the driver and passenger airbag inflators. Apparently, and this is their wording

"the inflator might release shrapnel from the inflator container during deployment"

If you have this model and havent had a recall, it might be worth checking. They say the work takes 2.5 hours. Having rung to book in, Im told the parts on back order for around three weeks.

A lot of Japanese makes have been affected. Our Nissan was rectified early last year.

Interesting. So Mitsubishi have only just fessed up to this.

The Japanese company that makes the defective airbag inflators must have millions in service so I’d guess that the replacement programme has been based on a risk assement taking various factors into account. One certainly would be if there’s an ageing related issue. Or another could be environmental factors. There would also be limitations on production rates too.
Just try and avoid any idiots for three weeks.

Thingy, had my recall back in December 2017, booked in Jan 18, made them collect and return, got fed up with recalls,!!!! (dealer 16 miles away)
Week later told them to pick it up again, every time we turned the wheel there was a grinding noise!! Also made them return it. ( My diesel every time though)

Just had a further recall on our Nissan. This one is to replace the passenger airbag. Looks very much as if they are working against a risk assessment that takes account of the availability of replacement airbags. In 11 years the airbag saga has been the only recall to have affected the car. It’s quite beneficial as now I can have confidence that with two new airbags there should be a lower probability of spurious airbag warning lights that can be so expensive to repair that the car gets scrapped.

What was the grinding issue Kev? Meant to ask, what part of the county are you in. I have had some very poor experiences with Mitsubishi Garages, although I have now found one thats exceptionally good.

Mine is going in on May 3rd.

Hi Thingy, perhaps grinding was the wrong terminology, it was more of a binding noise and they returned it saying it was a dry joint, thats what they told OH, I wasnt here when returned.
We are down in Devon and have to use the Exeter Dealer.

I booked my Shogun in last Friday, for the recall work to be carried out. I had agreed to leave the car at the dealer all afternoon, so that they could complete the work.
On arrival I was told only the passenger side could be done, as they had not received the part for the drivers side. On completion of the one replacement Air Bag injector, they did not have the decency to call me and let me know the car was now ready for collection. When I called late afternoon to ask for an update, I was told it was ready, but unfortunately for me, it was too late to try and collect as they closed at 17:30.
I collected the car on the Saturday morning and it is now booked in for this afternoon, so that the drivers side can be replaced.
I am not very impressed with their customer service and hopefully they will asked me to fill out a customer service survey, where I can express my disappointment.
Regards,

This is becoming a theme with Mitsubish dealerships.

I travel to Stoke to Holdcroft Mitsubishi, bypassing a couple of agencies on the way - deliberately. I have found Holdcroft to be the exception and they very often go above and beyond to help out. Alan the service manager is the most accomodating and genuinely nice guy you could wish to meet. If they are in your area, give them a try.

And brilliant, the garage rang to say the parts are still on back order and they havent the foggiest when they will arrive. As this was billed as an urgent safety recall, Mitsubishi hardly seem to be taking this seriously.

Still waiting for my Nissan passenger airbag to come in after receiving letter last week. But Nissan expect them in this week and fitting will then be within a few days at most.

Nissan received the new airbag within one week of me receiving the recall letter and then phoning them. Car could have been done next day but that wasn’t suitable for us, so done two days later.

Our local Mitsubishi main agent closed last year and driving through Coventry today I see the one there has closed too. Are Mutsubishi UK reducing their footprint which won’t help sales as people don’t want to drive miles for service and support.

Not sure about reducing the footprint, but I have found Mitsubishi dealerships on the whole to be somewhat slipshod. Good ones are few and far between and that may have a lot to do with it.

Well after waiting four and a half weeks for the garage appointment which as you know was cancelled because the parts hadnt arrives, tow and a half weeks on they still arent in country, and contacting Mitsubishi direct they tell me "they really cannot tell me when these parts will be available.

From a legal standpoint, if I drive the car and somebody is injured by the airbag inflator, I suspect that I will be told that I knew there was a problem, ergo I shouldnt have driven the car. However, If I dont drive the car, according to the Ombudsman, I have no claim against Mitsubish as my contract as we know is with the dealer, but says I wouldnt have a claim for loss of use. Catch 22 anyone?

You could turn off the passenger airbag, but the incidence of an airbag malfunction is probably far less a probability than having the airbag being required to protect you and a front passenger in the event of an accident.

Could always buy a Nissan :)
