I was on duty for St John Ambulance in Chelmsford and the amount of people along the route was amazing. Luckily we had no major casualties.
The cyclists were so fast that if you blinked you missed them but I can say that I was there and saw the Tour de France

Oh yes, been there, done that, could not afford a T shirt "you are spot on Mike"
Fancy having a bike race on the day we decide to go to York for some shopping!!! :woohoo:
3hrs to get there and it's only 18miles, nowhere to park, restaurants full, cafes full, the bikes went past like greased lightening you could not tell who was who, apart from that bloke in the orange and black shirt that seemed to be struggling can't see him getting to Paris,
then it was all over 10mins tops, quick cup of tea and back to the car,
getting out of the city was like the starting grid at Monaco, but it still took 2hrs to get home,
hope next year they start somewhere else, or I'm going to Cornwall out of the way!!!.

Just got home from two weeks at Dunnington 4 miles east of York.
We watched the actual Tour on wide screen in the local. Amazed that the leaders have to breathe in the CO from the leading cars and motorcycles! !
The next day we followed the route York Ripon Pateley Bridge etc.
I've never seen so many yellow bikes hanging the route. The hand knitted mini jerseys hanging everywhere were delight.

Organised a rally for Le Tour and for the Great Yorkshire Show the following week. Had a great time, able to walk into Harrogate to go see in finish of stage 1 and walk to Starbeck to see the caravane and bikes go past on stage 2 also. Great to see the build up of the finish line from Thursday onwards and brilliant atmosphere in the town and Fan Park with large screens showing the action. Great weather too. Harrogate and Knaresborough looked great with yellow bikes and bunting everywhere. Well worth all the effort putting the rally on, even with a little bit of extra traffic. Then there was the Great Yorkshire Show! 12 nights away and thoroughly enjoyable.

Hi Lizzie. A late reply but you know what they say about that!!!! Yorkshire certainly did the UK proud and with no shortage of enthusiastic followers and doubtless many a New and or Born again Cyclist for many a regular motorist and caravanner's to hurl abuse at.
Yes Ms Rooster & myself went out on day one in the Z3 Roadster (open air motoring) and made our way out of West Lancashire and over to just North of Skipton with the intention of going to the stretch between Grassington & Kettlewell by using the Rat Run through Flasby & Hetton only to find the B6265 was a no go zone just before Cracoe.
We were on the downhill run after a short rise just after Rylstone.
The breakaway three went passed behind the lead vehicles and motorcycle outriders and then a few minutes later the remaining 198 riders passed in what was little more than a couple of blinks of the eyes.
We spent the next hour or so ducking and diving around the road-blocks in an attempt to get to Guiseley to the former Harry Ramsden's Fish Restaurant (now the Wetherby Whaler).
All-in-all a lovely day out albeit a 195 miles round trip.
