Trailer light problems such as brake or tail lights flashing instead of the winkers are almost always down to a bad earth. the current just finds another way out - ie via the stop or tail bulbs.

Refusal to come on at all is a dud bulb, blown fuse, dodgy socket or connector. Check for continuity with an ohm meter from the trailer earth terminal to the L&R winker terminals - if continuity OK then supply to those terminals from the car must be suspect - Connect a Voltmeter across the earth and winker feed terminals with the winker switch 'on' (I generally use the hazard flasher which checks both bulbs/terminals together.)

Good Luck - Beano.
