just a question for all you techies. Is it essential to remove the battery from its enclosure over the winter period assuming you plug in the mains once a month for a day and use the on board charger to keep the battery charged? Obviously you would have to ensure the electrolyte is at the correct level, or should I remove it and use a separate trickle charger?

It all depends on the charge/controller fitted to the van whether its a wise idea to leave the battery in the van.

If its a sophisticated unit like a Schaudt Electroblock or an other phase type charger then yes it's ideal.

Again a very safe way is to use a CTEK XS3600 fitted either to the battery whilst its still in the van or if it's out of the van on the bench. Disconnect or otherwise switch off the vans charger, whilst using the CTEK to be doubly sure. Dont place the battery directly on a cold solid floor, put it on a bench or two 2" x 4" timber offcuts.

With a phase charger it is best just to leave it on mains to condition the battery.
