Length of hook up lead

Was going to buy a hook up lead yesterday at a nice little caravan shop I found but they advised me I would be better off buying a 25m lead rather than a 10m one as it may be too short in some situations, and that the long one was what most of his customers purchased. Would I indeed be better buying the longer lead or will a 10 or 14m lead suffice? Obviously the 25m one costs a fair bit more but they were very helpful when I said I was only new to caravanning so I don't think they were after a sale.

I have also seen a 16amp, 240V industrial hook up cable for sale in Screwfix. The connections look the same and the cable is blue. Could this be used on a caravan? Cost is the same as the 10m one from the caravan shop. However, it also gives me the choice of 1.5mm or 2.5mm thickness. Which is normally used for caravans?

It's these items here http://www.screwfix.com/prods/83877/Electrical/Industrial/240V/Site-Distribution-Lead-2-5mm-14m-230V;jsessionid=3OAIUK2BOBAK2CSTHZOCFFY?ts=59281 and http://www.screwfix.com/prods/38611/Electrical/Industrial/240V/Site-Distribution-Lead-1-5mm-x-14m-230V;jsessionid=3OAIUK2BOBAK2CSTHZOCFFY?ts=59669 Thanks for any advice.

Netti,

Your caravan shop gave you good advice - the 25 metre hook-up is much more use than the shorter versions - you'll often need to cross another pitch to reach the power pole.

And yes, the Screwfix items you showed are identical - except that the 2.5mm core is the better one to buy. Industrial power leads are colour coded - yellow for 110V, blue for 230V, etc

To comply with BS EN 60309-2 a caravan hook up cable has to be heavy duty three core flexible PVC shielded cable in which each core has to be 2.5mm squared.

It should be 25mtrs(+or- 2mtrs)

Netti,

If you can afford it buy both a 25 & 10 metre lead as it will give you all of the options, if you are close to the EHU post & only have a 25 metre lead you HAVE to uncoil it completely, othewise you run the risk of it overheating & possibly catching fire

25m lead is the best option....GeorgeB makes a very good point...always uncoil the lead, regardless of size..

I would, however, not buy a 10m lead......a 25m lead gives you a better selection of pitches when bollards are a bit on the thin side.....

Cheers.......David

I've got two 25m cables and a 10m one. On some isolated sites I've had to use all 3 to connect to a distant power point, so I'd certainly go for at least one 25m cable.

Hi. Cut your 25M length about 10M from one end, fit the relevant male and female plugs and you have three options. A 10M length, a 15M length and when plugged together, a 25M length. Use what ever length you require to reach the bollard. No more coils of cable or lengths of cable running up and down the back of the van.

Henry.
