I would wire up a socket (7 0r 13 pin as appropriate) identifying the pins required for the road lights and plug in your van plug You will still need a 12v source of course, if not the car a separate battery. As a matter of interest why do you need to do this? (if it is to test the lights but manouvering the car into position is too much hassle as I once found in the past, then do as outlined above but you need a long enough lead to reach the car and fitted with a plug to go into your car socket) I realise this will not be too easy if your van is in the next town to where the van is parked!!

thanks bill i will try this ,the reason is that my caravan is towbar first in my drive and i would like a piece of kit that would show you at first sight which lights are working before the van is connected up to the car on the road

Yes, good idea. I made mine after I had a problem with the electrics when we were all hitched up ready to go, delayed us by several hours when with the extension lead I could have found out we had a problem the day before.

Hi Richard

Like Bill D I made up a lead with a 7 pin socket in which I connected up the road light pins. I hav recently changed the 7 pin socket for a 13 pin one to suit new car and caravan. On the other end of the cable is a 12 volt 2 pin plug. I plug the caravan 13 pin plug into the socket and route the the cable through the front window, locked on first notch, and plug into 12 volt socket near to TV socket.

I use this lead when I have the 'van parked, unhitched, on the road outside our home just prior to leaving for trips. I connect the 'van mains lead to a socket in the garage to prevent flattening the caravan battery.

The reason that I made and use this was to comply with the road traffic acts as only cars, not other vehicles, are allowed to park on the road overnight without road lights. It, also, makes the caravan more visible to other drivers, although we do live at the end of a cul-de-sac.

I have been using this system satisfactorily for about 5 years now.

Regards

Tim
