Light Weight Gas Cylinders in France

I have noticed that there is wide availability of the lightweight butane gas containers in French garages attached to the hypermarkets at very much lower prices than in the UK. We spend our summer caravanning in France and would like to use these and wonder if anyone has converted to them? I would like to know if they are compatible with my UK caravan and also to find out which regulator they use. It seems to me that most of these use screw-on fittings available in the hypermarkets for about 17 euros- anyone able to help with this?

Hello Keith

I assume the butane gas you are referring to is Camping gaz. This gas is perfectly satisfactory, but it depends on which type of gas carcase you have in your caravan.

If you have the system where the regulator clips or screws directly to the bottle, then it is a relatively easy job to change over. Simply replace the UK regulator with the Camping gaz model that produces 28mB output pressure.

If you have a bulkhead mounted regulator, then it is a little more complicated as you need to source a high pressure hose and bottle connector known as a 'pig-tail'. This will supply gas at high pressure to your exsiting regulator and all will be well.

If you spend most of your time in France, then why not stick with camping gaz her in the UK. - unless you winter caravan, in which case you should consider changing to Propane for winter use.

As with all gas issues, only tackle the job if you are deemed competent to do so, otherwise refer the work to a competent fitter.

I have used two French Primagas Twiny propane cylinders for a number of years now.

Much cheaper than Camping Gaz.

Providing that you use the correct regulator (detendeur) then you will not have any problem.

Keep yous eyes open for special offers in Hypermarch
