New Caravaner, about to set off on our first local outing on monday. Ive done an empty run to practise towing and reversing etc so all ok on that front.

I have a question re loading. My Parents who gave us the caravan (they have given up touring) used to store clothes in the wardrobe, all hung up on the rail etc. To me this puts the weight too high for my liking as i'd prefer everything on the floor.

Can you travel with clothes on the wardrobe (in terms on weight loading?)

You are correct in your statement that weight high up is less than optimal. However, I do feel that one would be overdoing things a bit by placing everything on the floor. There is room for judgment here, just be sensible about it and don't put the awning in an overhead locker, for example (assuming it would fit). One can find plenty of caravans with relatively heavy air conditioning and/or satellite units mounted on the roof and they are still quite manageable. Usually the wardrobe is fairly close to the middle of the caravan and that helps a bit, too.
