IN REPLY TO MR & MRS STEPHENSONS LETTER IN JANUARY ISSUE REFERENCE LORRIES IN MIDDLE LANE, HE SHOULD CHECK HIS FACTS BEFORE POINTING A FINGER AT THE LORRY DRIVERS, OR SPEND AS MUCH TIME ON THE ROADS AS I DO AND NOT JUST AT WEEKENDS. IF HE WAS A GOOD CARAVANNER HE WOULD ALLOW TIME FOR HIS JOURNEY DOING A MAXIMUM OF 60MPH AND LEAVE US LORRY DRIVERS TO TRY AND DO OUR JOB DOING ONLY 56MPH TO MEET DEADLINES AND DELIVER GOODS TO EVERYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY NOT JUST THE M6. MR G LOVEDAY(CARAVANNER AND LGV DRIVER, NOT STUPID)

Having been in transport for some 25-odd years, I have a degree of sympathy with George, but I can`t get on with the self-righteous HGV drivers who are always going on about how persecuted they are.

Yes they are bound by oodles of regulations, but there are many out there who knowingly choose to disregard the laws, secure in the knowledge that, in the unlikely event of getting caught the penalty won`t outweigh the benefits.

And of course they all obet the laws.

Like the clown in a 40 foot artic (parcel carrier, four letters, starts with "L", type of big cat) that just failed to put me into the central barrier in heavy traffic on the M62 outside Leeds. Well he did have his indicator on but he can`t use the outside lane can he? Wanna bet? Prat. Just hope when he has his accident no-one else is involved.

Phone the number on the trailer and tell the world what a t*** he is. Otherwise go shout it to the mountain.

Sorry but it's true.

Trust me,I`ve tried.

All you get are sarcastic comments like `well you shouldn`t be on the `phone when you`re driving`.

I know, I`ve tried.

If you really think big Companies give a stuff unless they are being litigated against you ain`t on my planet.

My experience is that I always (nearly) get flashed back in when overtaking. I have more problems from cars than any lorry driver.

If it takes a bit longer so the guy can pass another lorry then so be it. I am on holiday when the van is on the back so no rush for me! Just a relaxed drive to the park.

Happy new year to all caravaners and Lorry drivers everywhere!

Hello George

We have been caravanners for many years and during our time 'on the road' we have found most lorry drivers to be very courteous and helpful - especially when we overtake they invariably assist us back, when safe, to the inside lane by flashing their headlights.

We have found that it is some of the foreign contingent that tend to be a bit more aggressive.

A question for all you HGV drivers out there. This is not sarcastic, just a genuine query. As a caravaner, HGV's would just about always flash me in, very nice of them too and I must admit, have a high regard for HGV drivers in general. However, since I changed to a motorhome (largish) and now have a little more freedom with my speed, (until someone tells me different)few HGV driver flash me in anymore. Is it because I'm doing 65-MPH in what amounts to be a truck and you think it's too fast?

It's only idle curiosity, not meant to start any debate.

I agree with Steve, why rush? I have found it much more relaxing to travel at 56mph when towing the caravan. Time lost is minimal and fuel saved can be quite considerable.

I find most lorry drivers courteous and helpful, of course there will always be the occasional bad one, and this applies to caravanners too. This statement doesn't apply to the 7.5 tonners mind - crazy!!

It's about time they were governed, it's probably the only time I feel any movement from behind when those loons fly by. When I see the plonkers zooming up from behind I brace myself for that sucky-in feeling hehheh!

I think we`ll all be pleased to know that 7.5 tonners ARE being governed starting Jan 1st, but it`ll take time for them all to fall into line. Unfortunately for `vanners it will lead to more congestion as once speed-limited they will be banned from the outside lanes (as per HGV`s) but should make life easier (safer?) for veryone else the rest of the time.

Definitely good news Angus, they might not be an artic but I wouldn't like to be hit by one of them at 70mph plus.

I find most lorry drivers very courteous when i'm towing my caravan but a number of times when solo i've been stuck behind two side by side on a dual carriage way. The outer one overtaking the inner one at 0.0001mph differntial speed. I was once stuck like this for 18 miles (no joke). I understand they are governed to a top speed but there's no reason the inside one can't lift of the throttle slightly to allow the overtaker back in.

On long trips towing the van on the M6/M1 from the North I am occasionaly overtaken by an HGV. I am always correct in expecting a Republic of Ireland registration to be displayed. Do they not have limiters in ROI. A lovely country and people but most of the roads or not brilliant for high speeds. A couple of years ago I was on the new Athlone bypass and then it was like a rollercoaster as it is built on peat. Sureley they should comply to EEC standards or is it the odd cowboy driver.

The governing down of 7.5 tonne trucks, will lead to an even

more congested situation in the middle lane, as even more trucks

limited to roughly the same speed, will spend more time in the

middle lane..........just wait and see......

Hi all,

When towing I normally set my cruise control at 60mph on motorways, if an HGV is in the middle lane overtaking, which is what the middle and outer lanes are for then it holds me up by 4mph for a short time, even if I were to be stuck behind it for an hour this would increase my journey by a mere 4 minuites, I dont hang about on the roads but these minor delays I can live with.

7.5 Ton trucks should be limited, quite a few drivers of these are idiots and if a car driving test was passed before around 1996 then the driver can drive up to 7.5 tons, at least now you need to have training and two extra tests after the car test to drive an artic or wagon and drag, as a result the quality of drivers tends to be much better, I hold a class 1 licence and do sympathise with people driving for a living although some should back off slightly at times on a dual carriageways or busy motorways to reduce overtaking times.

On the whole roads are congested, poorly repaired and designed but we are stuck with them, the biggest hold ups on motorways I see are solo cars driving in the middle lane with the inside lane empty, this makes a three lane motorway into a two lane road and with only 66.666% of the road in use we all get held up.

spj.

Agree Glenn but even worse is the tailback that it causes. When the queue is a couple of miles back traffic eventually comes to a crawl or even a standstill due to the knock on effect. How many times has anyone come to a stand on the motorway only to suddenly start moving again and find theres no accident/road works etc. It's all down to the one lorry overtaking another at the speed you mentioned. Sometimes I get the feeling the lorry that's being overtaken is extracting the urine out of all of us :O(

Glenn, I hear what you're saying, but the responsibility does not lie with the overtaken driver. The man doing the overtaking should have ascertained that he had sufficient power BEFORE starting the manoeuver. As lorry driver and transport manager of some 40 years experience ( now only part-time) if I come up behind a truck travelling fractionally slower than me, I find it easier to click the cruise control back a notch until conditions allow me to overtake safely. I do agree, though that idiot drivers blocking two lanes for mile after mile are a pain in the bum, and the overtaker should be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.
