Mains Hookup

I have my caravan on a permanent mains hookup, using a standard 25mtr cable through a three pin adaptor passed through an open window.

I am trying to find a socket similar to the one you plug into on a caravan site bollard,so far without success. The idea is to have a permanent waterproof connection on the outside of the house into which the caravan mains cable can be plugged.

There are loads of sockets for caravans and awnings, but can't find one for a house.

Anyone got any ideas?

Frank, If I read your post correctly, why don't you put a plug that will plug into the caravan on one end of a cable and an ordinary 13a plug on the other end that will plug into your house. That is what I do.

You don't need a plug like the one that plugs into the site mains bollard.

Hope this makes sense.

Graeme.

Frank,

I've fitted an external IP44 "caravan connector" on the side of my garden office - so I can do as you want to.

It's made by Lewden in the UK, part number PM16/541 - and is designed for wall mounting - and I'm pretty sure I bought it from Wickes or B&Q - but some two or three years back.

Remember this will need a separatly fused / RCD feed.

If you fit an external covered type mains socket (try Srewfix) you will have a socket for other uses like lawn mower, jetspray etc.

I would recommend RCB/RCCD protection for any of these uses, you may have it already from your consumer unit.

Frank, obviously I didn't read your post correctly, so ignore what I wrote!!!!!!
That's all right Graeme. The idea was to take a standard caravan cable and plug it into a three round pin plug as found on a caravan site bollard, without having to pass it through an open window and use an adaptor into the nearest domestic socket.

This can be achieved using the suggestion about Lewden connector PM16/541.Alternatively following the screwfix/tlc suggestions I came across an MK masterseal product with two ordinary three pin sockets and an RCD.Although this means making up a new caravan cable with a three pin plug, this is totally waterproof and protected. In each case a 16amp cable is led through the wall and the products live outside permanently ready for use.

Frank, we got there in the end!

I plug my home made cable into my garage 3 pin socket (RCD protected) and run it under the garage door - which has a thin rubber seal on the bottom. This plugs into the van mains inlet and I can use whatever I want from there. I gather this is what you do but your cable passes through a house window.

Hi Frank Bought mine in B&Q I think bolted it to the garage wall with a load of mastic behind it to help with water getting into it and it has worked fine ever since, the caravan is permently plugged in whilst were at home.

It is exactly the same piece as in your caravan which you plug into, so should be able to order it from if your local caravan shop does not have it.

Infact cut and paste this on E Bay, it doesnt work type in "caravan electric socket"

Kevin,

VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING.

It most definitely is NOT the same piece as "in your caravan".

The piece you need is a power socket, not a Plug as mounted in your caravan. IE you MUST use a female piece as it is on the caravan end of your cable, not the male integrated into the caravan. The unit I suggested is a female unit adapted for wall mounting.

The caravan unit would not work and is incredibly dangerous.

JTQ, your right it is female as the E Bay product I mentioned, It is connected via armad cable to an RCD unit with its own fuse.

Sorry for misleading anyone with my post.
