Hi Maria

If you go to Equipment and accessories and into the thread on Black bits in the loo you will find answers to your question including mine.

The reason you are getting the black bits is the balance of pink or rinse which you are using.

The manufacturer of the one that causes the most problems likes you to use it incorrectly so that you then buy the tank cleaner.

If you use a product like Kemdirect you will not have the problem in the first place. All the details are on the thread and web site so I am not going into detail again..sorry too late and off to bed.

Hello Joyce,

So that's what those black bits are that so many people have been talking about! With so many reports I was beginning to wonder why I seem to have been the only one not afflicted but now I know. I don't put any of the pink stuff in the water that causes the black bits.

Hi,

As others have said, the black spots are mould or fungal growth - and is caused by leaving the top tank "wet" in storage (and bottom tank too - but I guess no one looks in there - well not willingly).

The solution is to make sure that when you finish your trip away, wash out the tank, and allow it to air and dry out. Prevention is better than more chemicals in the environment.

And mould is the English spelling. People who spell colour "color" have the same issue with mould.

Hi there Lutz hope you are ok...not coming to Dusseldorf this year so will not see you if you are going.

Robert..... if you use Kemirect you will be putting even less chemicals in to the environment as there is no dye and smell in the products and these are all chemicals in the other products.

They are we think the purest you can buy at the moment and still do an excellent job.

By the way if you had a motorhome then most of them do not have a flush tank, the toilet is fed from the main water tank. They do not put anything in the top ( do not have one ) and they seem to be ok with their toilets and they do not suffer from the black bits or any other problems we caravanners seem to.

So you do not really need to put anything in the top only if you want the bowl to be cleaned as you flush but then you could use a water spray as many motorhome owners do.

So Maria you have a lot of choice of products and how you actually use you toilet and whether you put something top and bottom. Everyone will tell you something different just keep trying until you get what you feel happy with!!

Hi Joyce,

A small amount of a fragrance and dye, whilst they are chemicals, are nothing compared to the massive amount of active ingredient in cleaning products.

Hi Robert

I agree.... but a lot of a little soon mounts up to alot !!

With our product you do not need a cleaning chemical it does the job itself so you must be helping the envirinment.

Hi Joyce,

Er no.

One product is a sachet containing 60 grams of dry chemicals; and another product is a pair of liquids comprising water, detergents, formaldehyde and other chemicals. Neither are great for the environment.

Prevention is better.

Hi Robert

I was not saying that Kemdirect had no chemicals only that it had less.

Most products if not all nowadays have no formaldehyde in them.

That is the problem with most of them and why they do not work as well as they used to do.

Does your comment mean that you use no toilet additive or rinse at all. Or do you just wash and dry your toilet after each trip?

You still must have poured chemical away when using your toilet so I do not undersatnd where the prevention bit comes in.

No,

We use either Kemdirect (bought from Camping Sport De Wit in Schijndel) or AquaKem (also from De Wit) in the bottom tank, and just plain water in the top.

Then clean and dry the top tank after the vacation.

It's interesting that this problem never used to happen with the Thetford pink stuff. We used it for years and only had this within the last 3 or 4 years with our most recent van.

Presumably there was some change in the formula a few years ago, with the result that we gave up on it. Strange marketing policy.

Hi Joyce,

I work in Rotterdam almost every other week, live in Brielle whilst there, and rural Buckinghamshire when in the UK - we have a company that builds process control systems for the petrochemical industry and laboratory automation systems for the pharmaceutical industry. A bit of software, a bit of hardware, and a lot of specialist knowledge.

Camping Sport De Wit is one of my favourite camping shops - at around 70.000 square metres it's enormous - and the prices are good.

Channel hop with Eurotunnel or P&O around 18 times a year, and we spend almost the same amount of money with the Auchan in Grande Sythe as we do with our local Tesco.
