Maximum Weight - Daydreaming

I was just wondering what car and caravan I'd like to have next (in a few years) and I've come up with...

Land Rover Discovery TDV8 - (hopefully they'll fit the V8 diesel in a few years) and

Elldis Crusader (Sirocco)

Now for a question. The weight of the car is around 2,500Kg and the van comes in at around 1,900Kg - a combined weight of 4,400Kg.

Somewhere in the back of my mind is a recollection that there is a limit of 3,500Kg (total train weight) but I can't remember is there is a way around this - any thoughts?

My current set-up is 1,900Kg and 1,400Kg so at 3,300Kg I'm within the limit at the moment - although 200Kg is not very much if I start to add passengers, luggage and bikes.

For reference, I passed my test 20 years ago.

MAM....your dreaming is making assumptions that the planet will be here in a few years time. If you listen to the "green" brigade all will be lost. You should be looking at an ideal tow car to be something like a hydro powered Fiat 500 towing a minute Tardis.

Seriously, If you passed your driving test before 1997 you are allowed to tow up to the weight limits allowed by the car manufacture, usually shown on the VIN plate or in the handbook. You do not need to take an additional test.

If you passed after January 1997 you are restricted to tow up to 100% of the cars weight to a maximum train weight (Car + Trailer)of 3500kg. To exceed these weights you need to take the additional driving test to obtain the B+E towing entitlement.

Thanks Mal,

I assumed you would already realise that the car would be running on biofuel and that there would be additional weight due to the solar panels on the van. I won't go into what we would be doing with the natural waste products!

But could to know I can carry on planning my next outfit.

As an aside, a few weeks ago I saw a lorry (non-articulated), towing a trailer (axles front and rear), which was towing a trailer (three axles in the middle), which in turn was towing a caravan (single axle). What a sight!

MAM.

You could get in the Q7 Q for the new Audi 4.2 V8TDI or if a lottery win is due your way the Q7 6 litre V12 TDI will be around later.

If you come up on the Euro Millions roll over, put a bid in to Ford and buy out Land Rover and get the Disco V8 under way ;)

It will be interesting to see who buys LR now and what the future holds for the marque.
