Hello all , I had chance this morning to do a little check around ROSIE , our caravan . On checking the tyres I noticed the sidewall rubber is starting to crack , they are neary 5 years old so maybe expected . Phoned round the local tyre suppliers to check prices , tyres being 175r13c load 94n Avon supervan 6 ply fitted at present . Out of four suppliers only one had Avons , £ 65.00 each fitted + £ 10.00 due to tyron bands each . thats 150.00 nicker , but two places had Maxxis tyres 8 ply 97s load , so these sound better and cheaper . One quoted £ 98.00 a pair + £ 20.00 fitting ( tyron bands ) the other £ 42.00 each with no change for tyron bands refitting , you can guess my choice . I would prefer a known brand but have read other posts on the difficulties of better brands not producing these commercial van tyres any more . So I ask . are Maxxis tyres any good and does anybody recommend them , all answers greatfully received ( tugging forelock ) --- Steve .

PS tyron bands are already fitted so the price is for necessary additional time taken , so they say , I say robdogs .

PPS forth supplier had Champiro tyres , never heard of them ,and every question I asked he had no idea and kept asking someone else with dubious replies , so discounted them , mind you £ 37,00 each .

GT Champiro tyres come from India and MAXXIS from China. Whilst that doesn't necessarily indicate that they are of poor quality, I would be a bit wary of both.

I can't comment specifically on Maxxis van tyres, but I've used there motorcycle tyres myself on many occasions in the past and found them to be very good value.

maxxis make superbike tyres which are pushed to some extreme limits and offer fantastic grip they are new on the market but i wouldnt hesitate on buying. them they were tested by a superbike rider (guy martin)who races the tt and he was impressed by them the difference between pirelli and maxxis was like 0.5 seconds on a flying lap ,so for vans and wobbleboxes i dont think there would be a problem.

If you do overload the caravan, not only do the tyres suffer, but also the brakes which are then more liable to fade. Therefore, one should avoid relying on a higher tyre load rating in the hope that that will cover you in case of overloading. Actually, the tyre load rating applies at the respective speed rating (usually at least an 'R'-rating, up to 170km/h). As caravans are not towed at that speed, the load margin is correspondingly higher. Therefore, there is no reason to select a higher load rating than standard.

I have mentioned in another thread about a sidewall blow out on a Trailblazer Sheng shin tyre, so today after getting the alloy wheel back from repair i had fitted what i was told a Maxxis tyre but having got it home its a Trailblazer again . Both are made by Sheng shin and they are reported as being the 14th in the world of tyre manufactures. However, taking off my other one just to clean it up i was dismayed to find the outside tread, not the wall but first part has got cracks between the "blocks". I will be seeking further advice on this.

Sorry for late reply but for what it is worth Maxxis tyres are used on some classes of racing karts. (MSA approved and used for 70mph plus) not same loading as a van of course but just to point out they are a reputable brand.
