Hi we have a 2007 Mazda 6 Diesel which we are generally please with for touring but have recently discovered an issue with Mazda diesels which had we known before would have made us discard it from consideration.
As the car was out of warranty I recently had it serviced at a local reputable garage as the dealer is a fair way from our home and a pain to get to. We also saved on paying dealer servicing labour rates. A week after the service we had the DPF light (Diesel Particulate Filter) start flashing. Reading the manual it says to consult your dealer and not ignore as engine damage can occur. There were also some horror stories on the web forums so off to the dealer we went.
It turns out that when the oil is changed the oil level has to be reset in the cars computer and this can only be done by the dealer who charges an hours labour to do so!! I took the car back to the garage who had serviced it and they tried 3 different diagnostics tools and none would work.
It therefore looks like you are tied to the main dealer for the life of the car which I thought was against the european rules. To say I am unimpressed is an understatement. Buy one at your peril. As soon as I can afford it I will be back to VW's
