Microwave ovens in caravans

We are thinking of investing in a microwave to take away for our next weeks holiday. However on calling a well know caravan accessory shop I was advised that I would need to buy one for £70 plus instead of an Argos cheap dosmestic type. The reason is that the ones made for caravans build up the power slowly but the dosmestic ones switch on at full power. This would/could cause a problem on site.

Has anyone else heard this before? Any advice/suggestions would be very welcome.

Pat,

You need to be aware that the power rating on a microwave box is the rating of the cooking "element" - the actual power consumed by the unit is up to twice the rated cooking power (cooking power + electricity used to make the magnetron work + turntable motor + light + control electronics)

So a 1000 watt microwave can (on switch on) draw up to 2000 watts and then settle down to something closer to 1500 watts

If you turn on a high power microwave whilst you have the caravan hot water heating, the Truma ultrastore heating the interior, the fridge on electric and a few room lights - you may well find the caravan trip decides enough is enough...

You can use a household microwave in a caravan, you just need to be aware of the power being used - and pick an appropriate model

Why do people keep saying that the microwaves in caravans high up are dangerous, i havent seen any evidence on this or other caravan forums which back up this thery. We have a mic high up and use it regually, with no accidents. if this was a problem surly the manufacters would have been sued by now and changed the position

Microwaved food can continue cooking after the oven has stopped heating it so it is possible for the food to ' spit ' out of the opened door - at eye level if the oven is high up.

Trucker - "Why do people keep saying that the microwaves in caravans high up are dangerous"

I tend to agree that they are potentially dangerous especailly for wee shorties like myself.

In my Senator Louisiana the Microwave is above face hight meaning I have to move boiling food from above my head. I imagine if this was in the office of a big company it would be banned by Health and safety.

My Wife has to stand on a plastic step and still reach above her head.

I can't complain as we bought the van and knew where it was located and everything else on the van is pretty much perfect for our requirements.

Thorpedo,

all I was trying to say is people keep on saying how danerous it is but knowbody has reported an accident on this forum or other ones I pop into. Also if anybody had a bad accident and sued the manufacture im sure they would not be still up high would they.

Lots of things can be potenially dagerous including crossing the road!!!

the standard one in our Indiana is the most basic Daewoo,I read somewhere that the digital ones gave problems due to the bumping about while travelling so Bailey went back to the mechanical type so it seems chepest is best.
