Hi I am intending to travel in europe for approx six or seven months taking in Germany, Denmark and Poland. Have not done anything like this before so would appriciate any tips re females travelling alone... well with my dog. Will try to plough through travel tips already posted but would like to hear of other females experiences... my brothers think I am certifiable... I want to prove them wrong

Are you taking a caravan or a motorhome/camper. Personally if I was travelling alone (or with dog) I would get a small to medium size camper. Easy to set up, easy to drive and great to tuck yourself away in a corner of a site, and just watch the goings on.

I know that the motorhome fraternity have members who do this, and may be able to offer advice. However, basically just go and do it, and solve the problems as you go along.

By the way, you have not mentioned age, unless that is a delicate subject. I only ask becasue many people ask this due to the death of a spouse and their desire not to vegetate away.

However, on the other side many young 'uns still go for the 'Bay Window' Volks painted with flowers and a lot of fun. Do they still sell them in Earl's Court in London after the Aussies have used them I wonder?

After much deliberation have bought small motor home.. McLoius Lagan... really pleased with my choice so far.

Not death of partner...unfortunately.... unlucky enough to have met con man so most of old life has literally gone.... so time to create new life... and have some fun along the way.

Have wanted to do something like this for years... as for age ... well I am young at heart... I think that is all that matters.

Hi Fiona - the best of luck to you. I can't say I've much relevant experience myself, except that one year I took my sons aged three and nine camping on the Mediterranean on my own, the first time I'd ever driven 'on the wrong side'. Also one year we did meet a lovely Dutch woman who was travelling around France in a tractor with a gypsy type caravan on the back. She was 'on her own' with her dog - and had been travelling for several months. Her progress was obviously slow, but she said that had helped her make more friends, and make the most of the weather! I must admit my experience of being a 'single' woman was very similar, in that people were all extremely helpful and friendly, and helped me join in whatever was going on.

I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Obviously a prime consideration is security. My advice would be to always stop on proper campsites with other campers and caravanners around you. I haven't 'done' Denmark or Poland, and 'done' Germany only a couple of times, but you'll find some lovely sites, I'm sure. Take a look at the Camping Cheque website, www.campingcheque.co.uk for a range of sites for

Sounds a great adventure. A small motorhome seems the best option for the type of trip you are planning. Make sure you take your laptop with you so that you can keep in touch with the forum. If you have problems and need advice there will always people on the forum who can help plus we can all find out how you are getting on. As Val A has said always stick to campsites and don't risk staying in service stations.

It is wonderful to meet people like you on our more staid travels.I have spent many an hour listening to their entertaining stories and looking at pictures they have taken. When we were in France this year we met a couple who had travelled the world for years after the splendid lady involved had been treated for cancer.Peter and Ivy they are called.
