Mobile Broadband

Gentlemen and ladies. In another three weeks I will be starting my annual one months holiday visiting Scotland, the Lake district and Yorkshire. For the first time I will be taking a laptop with me. What is the best way of getting one months internet access for keeping in touch with e-mails and a little browsing. I'm told I need a Dongle. I use a PC at home. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Henry.

Henry I don't think you'll have much luck with your dongle. Most caravan sites are pretty remote and a lot can depend which service you're with and the reception in that area.

The best I've got so far is dial-up speed but mostly I get nothing.

I'm answering this using a Vodaphone dongle in my laptop in my van on holiday in the Isle of Mull, no 3G signal, but more than adequate for surfing forums / e mail / bank etc. Bigger prob has been keeping the laptop's battery charged.

Hi Henry,

I use an Asus netbook with built-in mobile broadband, courtesy of Orange.

I take it every time I go away and usually manage broadband speeds - even in quite remote areas.

In the Brecon Beacons last week, though, I only managed dial-up speeds - but that was fine for checking emails, the weather forecast etc.

Only once have I struggled to get any signal.

You should do even better with a dongle as you can hang it out of a window to improve reception.

I too am replying using the mobile dongle. I use t-mobile pay as you go. No time limits for credit and they do offers for 7 or 14 days and a months usage. Works out at just over a pound for 24 hours. I am at Flamborough on the east coast and it is notorious for a bad signal(as I write there is no signal on my mobile)but the dongle is working. Only failed once in a year and that was at Longleat CC. Anyway enough of this I'm off to start on the wine!!!
