I have discovered some damp in my caravan, Question is can anyone reccommend a mobile repairer who will do a good job. On one of the forums a couple of people reccommended a guy from Warrington, but I cannot remember his details. I live in Northwich, Cheshire and I would be glad if anyone can help

Hi Colin, sorry cant help you with your request for mobile repairer.
How ever have you considered doing it your self?
How bad is it, what are the signs of damp you have found. It really is not that diffulcult but it is time consuming, preparing to re-instate every thing, I did a major damp repair,re-sealed awning rails etc.
I posted all the photo's of the repair on here and they are here some where but and I have just done a quick search and surprise surprise
it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack!! If you are interested in having a go let me know and I will have another go for you.
( I did have a link up until a few days ago then my computor crashed and I lost every thing)

Hi Colin,
A google search came up with the following in Warrington
http://www.a1mobilecaravanservices.com/#Home
Could that be the one you are looking for?

Gagakev, that was some project you took on, absolutely no way would I have thought about taking that on. Did you realise the extent of the work needed before you started? or was it a case of discovering it as you went along.

Hi Rob, Many thanks for the info, I am sure that is the one I was looking for, as you say Gagakev took on a BIG project, I am not sure that I could do it. I think the man with the van is for me

Hi Gagakev, many thanks for your reply, but I do not think that I have the ability to take the task on myself, I don't think the damp is as bad as yours looked but I think I will call the man and his van from Warrington, once again thanks a lot for you info. If you are ever in this area bring your tools along and I will supply food and drink

You'll be cheaper getting the man with the van to do the whole job, I've heard about Gagakev's capacity for food and drink.

Hi Rob,
No if I'm honest I did'nt realise the extent of it to start with, but with every thing in life you expect it to be localised and then it gets bigger and bigger!! It was a case of discovering then having to get on with it, it was in the middle of winter and freezing cold but as you can imagine once complete the satisfaction was enormous, may be I'm one of the lucky one's in life where I can turn my hand to most practical things in life. I renovated a house I acquired a few years back and it took me 2 years, evenings and weekends.
The van was a 1991 Abbey Stafford and when I traded it in the salesman commented "wonder if my damp meter is broke, I cant seem to get a reading"
Another satisfiying moment in life.

Colin, make sure you get a fixed quote/estimate, as said it is a very time consuming repair, I resealed the other half of the awning rail a few months later in the warmer weather and it took me 8 hours just to clean it!!!
PS As Rob has said I do like my food and drink and my tea/lunch breaks only last 2 hours each!!!

Wow that repair job was impressive. I would have been crying, and ringing a scrap dealer if it was me.

Hi Joann,
It was actually very satisfiying especially as I had the van for over three years and when sold, I got the same price as I paid for it,
and I kept the awning, aqua roll, waste hog cutlery and everything that came with it when I brought it in the first place, happy days.

Hi Gagakev, that is good advice, I will ask for a fixed quote, but maybe a job like damp needs a bit of leeway, maybe I should ask for a maximum estimate, maybe that would be fair for both parties

Hi Big S, I called John this morning and had a chat with him, he does not do bodywork and damp, he specialises in servicing, motormovers and electrical, but he reccommended a friend Anthony. I gave hima call and he came to look at the job, gave me a price and date to start, I will report back on the forum when all is complete. He also gives an 18 month guarentee !

You will get an eighteen month warranty as well from Anthony for the work that he undertakes, which underlines the good work that he carries out.

Knowing the way that damp/rot issues are very difficult to assess from an external inspection, I would be very wary of any company that offers a fixed price repair for a damp problem.

The only way to fully establish the extent of damage due to water ingress is to expose the affected area.

Friends caravan that had a visible damp problem in a front corner, ended up with a complete rebuild of the front 30% of the caravan.

However a good repair, using properly treated materials should last well.

I agree with Prof John - its impossible to give an accurate quote for damp has its impossible to see how bad it actually is until work is started, my quote was given subject to the damp condition found on day of repair. There was more problems has it had spread a little but A1 agreed on the quote they originally gave me has i am one of there exsisting customers! (thats good loyalty to there customers) Also, i have never heard of anybody giving an 18 months guarantee! A1 gave me a 12 month guarantee (NCC recomend a minimum of 6 months,) so i thought that was very resonable concidering you have a damp check every year with your service. After lots of different companies inspecting my water ingress problem i decided to use A1 Mobile Caravan Services in Warrington, technician also called Anthony (not the same Anthony has above posts!!) - he was fantastic and very reasonably priced, nothing was too much trouble they did a fab job and i would highly recomend them! they also carry out Services, and lots of other extras.... www.a1mobilecaravanservices.com
