I have two Mondeos the one currently used for towing is a company car and spends its life parked on the drive the other is my own and lives in the garage, however I want to kit it out with a towbar but the extra length will mean a major tidy up to get it to fit in the garage. So I am thinking of having a detachble towball instead, how have you found these, are they a pain to fit when its raining and have to kneel in the mud, also can anyone recommend a make and possible places to get one fitted I am based around 20 mile north of Birmingham but can travel if need be.

Each towbar manufacturer has his own system for attaching and locking detachable townecks so it's difficult to give an opinion which is valid in all cases but my experience is that you usually only have to kneel down to insert and lock and you don't have to get under the car.

Of course, you can always go the full hog and get a swing-out version that you can operate either by means of a handle inside the boot (a factory-fitted option on some cars) or, to top it all, an electric power operated towbar. I don't know whether anyone makes them for the Mondeo but they do exist.

The factory-fitted towbar on the Vectra is a swing-out type, for example.

The detachable towbar on my XC70 Volvo takes about 10 seconds to fit with no crawling underneath the car. I don't know what the Mondeo one is like but it may be that, as Ford owns Volvo, they are similar.

I wouldn't bet on Ford and Volvo tobars to be similar or even from the same supplier. Vauxhall and Saab towbars are completely different although both companies belong to GM. Only with the next generation of Vectras/Saab 95 will an attempt to commonise be made.

Tony

I be care full if I was you the thing is we got a Ford Focs C-maxs that we tow with.

When we were looking to get a tow bar for it we look at the ford one that would detach we found out that fords own make would only let you pull 1250 kg when the c-maxs can pull 1500 kg so we when with a witter.

I do say that the ford mondeo is the same but I would have a look in to it if I was you just to see.

Tony, I had a witter detachable fitted to my accord tourer when the vehicle was new, then last November when someone ran into the back of the car the Witter was replaced with a Bosal detachable by the Honda dealer through insurance. Both work exactly the same simply clicking into place with a clear indicater that they have secured correctly. As Paul says they take no more than 10 seconds to fit and require no crawling around under the vehicle.

I have a 2003 Mondeo Graphite 115BHP fitted with a Brink detachable towbar for pulling an 2002 Archway 470 Royal (based on the Abbey GTS Vogue 215) 1350Kg MTPLM. The towbar was supplied and fitted by Indespension, a national company that has a depot in the west mids 01215615467. The towbar is easily accessable and installed/removed within seconds without having to kneel in the mud. Its given me no problems whatsoever I will definately have another fitted to any future vehicle.

Thanks folks,Jon if you have and Archway you are probably from the Leicester area? if so a bit like me which indespension did you use.As I say I have got the two 130 modeos one with the fixed towbar but think the detachable must be tidier apart from getting it in the garage,I also tow an Abbey the Vogue 416.

Tony I travelled 120 miles from GT Yarmouth to get the Archway(the best deal at the time but still expensive as I had only taken it for a service), I had the towbar fitted at the Norwich branch it was about
