Not sure if this is the best/correct place for this postings of under towcars or even this forum.

I have 03 plate mondeo 2.0tdci 130bps and yesterday when turning sharp left up on to a hump back canal bridge the engine stopped instantly leaving me of course with very heavy steering and no footbrake (joy of joys always gets the andrenalin going - down the leg)despite cranking only started after about 5-10mins after I left the ignition in the on position for a while and the turned the starter.

Today it did it again also on a sharp left corner, took a couple of minutes to get going using the same method.

Spoken to my Ford dealer who does its servicing they are puzzled can only suggest connector on the end of the injector rail.

Anyone got any ideas as the thought of it doing it again but with the van on the back is not a pleasant thought.

Probably one chance in a 1000 of this being the cause in your case - but a friend had a problem with the power steering pump on a Mondeo - it was siezing and as a result the belt friction stalled the engine at low revs.

Always happened when turning.

Changed the power steering pump and the problem went away.

Any rumbling noises froim the pump or squeals from the belt as it slips?

No strange noises or symptoms before or since, always the problem with intermittent faults, garage suggested electrical connection at the end of the injection rail but this seems ok,luckily (or not)I have another Mondeo albeit a 54 plate so think the other is off down the road!

The engine management ECU (electronic control unit)may have recorded a fault albeit intermittant, ask your Ford dealer if they can interogate the ECU

Sounds very much to me like your steering pump is siezing, which causes the engine to labour too hard and then the engine management system shut's down and needs the two mins to re-initialise.

Give the garage your best "victor Meldrew" impersonation and have a chat. They might be able to sort it then.

with a diesel if it cuts out then allows you to restart it again after a few minutes it sounds like a fuel problem. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? also worth trying some injection cleaner with a tank of diesel, could be gunged up injectors.

the reason for the glow plug flashing is it doubles as a malfunction indicator lamp. there are basicly 2 types of engine control systems on a tdci mondeo

early level twin box system with an injector control unit & a powertrain control unit.

later level one box with all incorporated into the powertrain control unit.

these system work in the same way & constantly monitor fuel & engine system , the reason for the engine cutting could be a number of things but if your ford agent connects via the 16 pin diagnostic plug near your throttle pedal he/she should be able to see a diagnostic trouble code stored within the memmory, if not the diagnostic unit can be left attached & the vehicle driven with live data displayed on the screen to aid diagnostics.

things that can cause this are contaminated fuel, partialy blocked fuel filter, camshaft position sensor, inlet metering valve, fuel rail pressure sensor, faulty injectoretc etc. ask your ford agent for a copy of yhe gignostic print out from the wds ( world wide diagnostic unit ) & to explain their findings & if they found nothing then ask them if they did a datalogger test (live readings on road test) & a fuel injector leak off test.

cheers

Hi everyone problem solved by garage, when I told them the glow plug light flashed they knew that it would show the problem when connected to the computer. It turns out it was the crankshaft sensor, they have replaced it and all is well with the world again.
