I read in todays papers that Toyota have said that they will stop selling diesel engined cars from the end of the year. I suspect other makers will watch what happens, but if it becomes a trend then finding large tow cars could be difficult in the future..

Volvo are heading in that direction too. Given the drop off in diesel sales there could be some good bargains out there. Providing you can get fuel into the future :)

I don't think the Bentley would make a good tow car as it's only 3 litre V6 and the dreaded torque might be too low!!!! It being petrol powered.

Maybe in the UK but diesel cars are still very much in demand in other countries especially in Africa!

If you want to feel how bad this diesel news gets , get a price for your car, used diesel values have dropped around 8% in the last 6 months

We are looking at a V8 4.2L Toyota Land cruiser with a full service history as not bothered with diesel scare mongering by the government as it is another tax con.

On Radio 4 news this morning was the report that CO2 emissions are at their lowest since Victorian times due to us no longer using coal. According to the report, They would have been lower still if it wasn't for increase in petrol fuelled cars as people switched from diesel.

But assuming you go for another diesel there will probably be a proportionate reduction in the price of thevnew car. Buying diesel now could be a good move given the drop in sales to the new and used trade. The only time that you will loose real value is if you get off the carousel.

Thats only if any manufactures are still producing diesel cars, Toyota the latest to drop them, Honda will be next. VAG group are struggling to get their diesels sorted , thats why Porsche have dropped them.Rumour mill is all big engined diesels will be dropped and only little 1.0 to 1.4 available as these are easier to control emmision and harmful gases.
Its going to cost too much to sort diesels emmisions out when Hybrid investment will cost the same so no need to invest in diesels anymore.

Yes it's only a good move whilst the market is so uncertain. Sooner or later stability will occur. The window is open. When it closes is any bodies guess.

it will take a long time before diesels are obsolete. although much like the smoking ban the areas you are able to participate in the driving of them will diminish over time as more cities and towns start to ban them from the streets there will be less places you can go. so don't worry too much there is plenty of time to get through a couple more of them.

I will continue to get big diesels as long as I can, suits my work mileage and the fact that I like the way they tow (especially so with my latest 530d)
I had a minor bump a few weeks ago, whilst the car was being repaired I was given a Toyota Prius, what a grim piece of tatt that was, poor build quality (which surprised me as i always thought Toyota were quite decent) plus it only did around 60mpg!.

Unfortunately for your neighbour the "English" wont be around much longer as a target for "silly rules" So I guess that we will have to set up our own Department of Silly Rules. But haven't we been doing that for years in our overly bureaucratic interpretation of directives?

I was talking to a Mazda salesman and he says that the CX5 petrol models have run out and new orders are having to be built at the factory in Japan. He blames it on Mazda underestimating the popularity of the new model but given the diesel is still there in numbers it would look like the petrol effect is part of the problem.

Thats just about my luck, purchase a second hand diesel car for towing, now they are thinking about banning from certain areas.
Guess i will have to get a solar panel fitted, and go rough camping, or whatever it is you call it.

I watch with interest how this all unfolds. There is a need for cars with good towing capability on both the domestic and economic sectors so I cant see them disappearing altogether unless a viable alternative is put in place to replace them.

The outcome of the test demonstrated the petrol version of the Tiguan was a perfectly capable tow vehicle, so it is a viable mechanical alternative to the diesel. Now that does not mean all petrol versions of current popular diesel tow vehicles will show the same potential but there will be some. We mustn't forget the original Range Rover's were always rated as excellent tow vehicles and they were petrol.

Modern developments of petrol, hybrid and all electric vehicles may produce some very good alternatives to diesels.

I doubt if diesel vehicles will be banned from some towns, it's more likely that this diesel demonization will be used as an excuse to charge you extra for driving in certain areas, on top of the premium rates of V.E.D that some vehicles already attract.
Weekend caravan rallies with one of the clubs is a great way to try camping off grid, especially if you do fit a solar panel.
Besides using your caravan to it's full potential it's an inexpensive alternative to rip off charges.
