We have a steep drive to our house. Does anyone have any tips or ideas how we can get our caravan up the drive without the end bottoming? Any thoughts gratefully recieved
We used to have the opposite problem, a short steep ramp from our drive to the public highway which caused the A-frame to foul. We solved it by putting my wife and son in the caravan at the very back to increase the A-frame clearance, just for a short distance!
We don't have the problem with our current caravan, despite it being longer.
Without actually seeing the case first hand it is difficult to advise fully. But try the following. Two builders planks with support blocks nailed on place to prevent flexing. placed strategically behind the van at the axle width should enable you to get far enough up the drive to clear the back of the van. Then if the planks are short ehough you can remove them before the rear wheels of the car go on them.
If you have not got a straight run to do this then a better plan will be required.
You could add some small wheels to the planks, so that when you want to move them, just turn them over so that the wheels are then on the ground. Just look at TV ariel engineers roof ladder for the idea. This will save your back having to cope with weight lifting.
It's a bit like playing with leggo until you get the right build.
If it is as steep as what you say do you not think you would be better of putting your van into storage. have you had a think about the saftey aspect. (suppose some idiot comes along and decides to remove chocks or anything else) I no its a long shot but its possible.
Family friends in Devon overcome this problem by putting all weight in the front of the van and setting jocky wheel so the tow ball just clears the ground and an inexpensive battery powered winch attached to a steel post concreted into the ground tows the van up the steep driveway to its level parking space.
