Miles per litre would be a real bastard unit, half metric, half Imperial. Besides, strictly speaking, neither mpg nor miles per litre are really a measure of fuel consumption but of specific fuel consumption. By definition, the stuff consumed, i.e. the fuel, should always come first. Gallons per mile (or litres per mile) would be the technically correct measure.

In the Gulf States, they used to sell petrol by the gallon but distances were in kilometres, which is the other way round and just as daft.

Some on-board computers can be switched over from mpg to litres/100km.

To work out mpg. When filled up divide litre amount by 4.56 this will give you the amount of gallons of fuel you have filled up with.Use this figure to divide the amount of miles you have done to mpg figure eg:80 lts filled up divide by 4.56 = 21.9 gallons 500 miles divided by 21.9 =22.83 mpg.

same reason we still buy pints of beer instead of litres and road signs are still in miles instead of kilometers and we still buy shoes in size 5,6,7 etc instead of 32,34,35 etc and we still have the pound instead of the euro and we still have a great nation instead of all that euro crap they try to push on us,

We are british and proud;.

The only reason they sell petrol in litres in my opinion is so you dont realise that it costs so much per gallon,88 pence per litre sounds better than 4.00 a gallon?.

You are slightly out with your conversion factor, it should be 4.546 litres to one imperial gallon not 4.56.

A very easy way to get an extemely accurate figure is using

9/2 + 1%

i.e. (miles X 9) /(litres X 2) = appx mpg

i.e (200 X 9) / (20 X 2) = 1800/40 = 45mpg

45 mpg + 1%(add a decimal point and repeat the figure) = 45.45mpg

If you work it out accurately the figure above is very close

i.e. (200 miles X 4.546)/20 litres = 45.46 mpg.

I aggree this MPG stuff is a bit daft when you come to think about it. As for doing detailed calculations to 3 decimal places, well all I can say is if I caught myself doing that I would think It's time to get a life!

Best thing I've found as a rough check that all's well is how far you go on 20 quids worth - yes I know not very far but I am a pensioner folks and to me fuel is liquid gold! So if I go more than 140 miles before bunging in another twenty notes worth thats OK - If I go on a long vanning trip then the 140 miles becomes 100 per twenty squid unless there's a tailwind which can mean 150 a score or money left in the kitty.

What are these Litros thingies anyway?

Well here in good old Blighty I think we still travel at miles per hour, and our cars have mileommeters fitted.

I'm sure Litres were invented by the euro-fuel companies just to fool us and confuse us into not being able to workout the cost of motoring. Then of coarse they advertise fuel at pence per litre to make it look cheap. We'd all have heart failure if we saw petrol was

The problem with miles per pound is that the cost of fuel changes all the time.

Back in the fifties your moggie would probably have done 70 mp

Agreed Garry, but it is the best way to calculate your running costs, which is probably why you want to know the MPG figure anyway. I've just done a round trip frm S. Wales to Spalding, total 4oo miles, and averaged 7 miles per
