Multiplex wiring

I have successfully fitted 3 towbars and electrics in the past, but my new car has multiplex wiring. I have read up on it, and everything seems logical. Get the special relay, feed it (fused) direct from the battery or fusebox. Connect the 12N wires to the outputs. Solder the inputs to the relevant wires close to the light cluster. And - apparently - Robert is your mother's brother.

A few questions:

1. Is it really that easy?

2. Or should I leave it to an experienced towbar fitter?

3. Has anyone fitted to a Peugeot 307? Any problems?

4. The 307 allegedly has a socket somewhere which can be used for the triggers. Is this true? Where is it? Is it actually wired up properly?

5. Is the Towsure bypass relay H52 any good?

6. Would you buy a towbar from eBay? I'm tempted by the price.

Thanks in anticipation ........

Most cars built in, or for, European markets have a connector within the wiring loom to allow easy connection of factory-fit towing equipment as these are much more common in some markets, notably Germany. The connector is only likely to fit the car manufacturers equipment, though, not general after-market electrics but it may be possible to cut the connector off and use the wires to connect to your relay. If you can access behind the boot trim you may be able to trace the wiring - the connector is often somewhere between the left and right rear light clusters.

Bypass relays are for cars with bulb failure warning, eg Towsure H22. Cars with multiplex wiring need checking with Towsure whether H52 is suitable.

If your car has an on board management system then you may need to get it 'programmed' to acknowledge the new trailer lights. Also some vehicles don't have simple wiring systems anymore. By that I mean they use relays etc to send signals to a nearby receiver to actually operate the lights and it can be quite complicated to get this correct. For peace of mind and the cost of possibly 200 pounds I would suggest get the experts to do the wiring. By all means fit the towbar yourself if you wish.
