I want to know if I could safely tow the above caravan. What Towcar.com says YES and the Caravan Club site says NO.
There is only the two of us in a four berth caravan and our two dogs (weight combined 46kg).

Hopefully the dogs will not be in the caravan when towingas this is very dangerous. I think the maximum braked weight a newish Peugeot can legally tow is about 1250kg. With new Peugeots the maximum braked weight is a lot less than the kerbweight.

On the log book it states 1000kg plus 300kg with a braked trailer, we could possibly be below or there abouts 1250kg. The problem could be the train weight. Caravan club reckon that we would be towing 107% and this is illegal. The car and the caravan would not be loaded for four people.
thanks for your reply.

What do you mean by 1000kg plus 300kg. Plus 300kg for what?
The kerbweight of a Peugeot 407SW is probably at least 1500kg so I don't understand how the Caravan Club arrived at a weight ratio of over 100%.
You should find the Gross Train Weight in the logbook, too, but based on an assumed kerbweight of 1500kg and a 1250kg caravan, there should still be enough margin for further payload in the car.

If I have the correct caravan and vehicle then these should be the figures
caravan MTPLM 1,230Kg
car Kerb Weight 1,567Kg
Car Gross Vehicle weight 2,127Kg
Maximum permissable towing weight braked 1,300kg

the ratio works out caravan to kerbweight of 78% which is ok however because you are restricted to towing only 1,300KG
this would mean THAT TAKING THE CARAVAN EMPTY you could only load it with 70 Kg the rest would have to go into the car
running at that your ratio would be 82%
This is my understanding but if my figures are correct regarding the vehicle weight and caravan weight lutz will be able to better calculate it for you

hope this helps John

Please ignore my earlier calculations
I understand your Miro to be 1001Kg
Your MTPLM to be 1,230Kg so you can load your caravan with 229Kg
you must not exceed the 1,230Kg

Your car can pull 1,300Kg so you are okay with that as the kerbweight of your car is 1,567Kg and your MTPLM is 1,230 you would run at around 78.5% so that is ok
The above assumes I have the correct car and caravan but based on what information you supplied I think I have unless anybodt says different

regards

John

Date of manufacture: august 2005 - february 2011

77%
1199 kg 1567 kg Important for safe towing is the weight ratio between Car and Caravan. The weight ratio (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) for the Peugeot and Sprite is 77%. The match between car and caravan is perfect.

The towing performances of this Peugeot with your Sprite are good (performance index = 57).

You may expect more than adequate performances from this outfit. On flat roads you can come along provided you've selected the right gear, in which case top gear is applicable in most cases.

On motorway inclines you will be able to come along quite nicely. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be sufficient power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.

This thread is yet another demonstration of how the third party towing web sites must not be trusted.

Either one or both of the mentioned websites or services must have varying or inaccurate information - the problem is you don't know which data is wrong.

Working out towing ratios is easy with a calculator :-

100x Caravan MTPLM divided by the cars kerbweight = towing ratio%

Get the data you need from the vehicle/caravans data plates, handbooks or registration documents - DO NOT USE THIRD PARTY WEB SITES.

If you are still in doubt about the values for MTPLM, kerbweight etc ask your vehicle supplier or manufacture for the data quoting your VIN number or serial number.
