Hi, has anyone stayed at Nairn Lochloy holiday Park to give me an idea of it. Heading up that direction during July, or if you have stayed in any site around that area would be a great help.

Hi George, haven't stayed at Loch Loy, but it is popular up here in the Highlands. On the downside,i believe they only take 10 tourers, so best book asap.

Other sites are;

All are an ideal base for exploring the Highlands,

Hope this helps,

Gavin.

Hi George,

We stayed at the Lochloy site a few years ago and my recollection is that there is room for more than ten vans but the touring area tended to get water-logged in rain.

I won't be going back there as there was a charge built-in to the site fees for use of the swimming pool and for "entertainment". If I wanted to use the swimming pool I would want to pay for it as and when used - not to be charged for it every day. Similarly for entertainment which I could never see us taking advantage of.

As for Nairn being ideal for touring the Highlands, I would question this. Sites in Glen Nevis, Glen More (near Aviemore), Morvich, Ullapool etc. are much better placed for touring the Highlands.

Having said all that, the town of Nairn is a nice enough place and there are quite a lot of places of interest nearby - Inverness,Fort George, the Moray Firth fishing villages and dolphin watching.

Try The Old Mill at Brodie, Moray, between Nairn and Forres. It has new owners and you can walk from your caravan to the Old Mill Pub and Restaurant, which also has new owners, for great food. It is a good base, with a Tesco, bank and varied shops at Forres and from there it is within easy reach of the village of Findhorn, bordered by sand dunes and beach and of course the beautiful Findhorn Bay, where we have spent many a happy hour watching Ospreys fishing. Here too is 'The Bunty' for the best fish and chips around and a couple of good pubs. One of which overlooks Findhorn Bay. The sunsets at Findhorn are fantastic. All these sites have websites.

From The Old Mill, it is half an hour to Inverness (cheapest petrol is at the Tesco garage, which you pass on your way).

Other sites we can recommend are Broomfield at Ullapool, from which you can walk into Ullapool and the site at Ardmair Point, further along the coast.

Thanks everyone, will be travelling over from Belfast in July to meet up with friends who are staying at Nairn Loch Loy who are staying in one of the static caravans, but after reading reviews on the internet about the park I think I will give this one a miss.

Again after looking around I have found Culloden Moor Caravan Club Site, anyone been to this one?

Just going to check out the ones mentioned on this thread.

Again, thanks for all your help.

George

George,

We have used Culloden CC site on a couple of occasions as an overnight stop on our way north and will be using it again this year.It is beautifully landscaped although most pitches reqire blocks as it is slightly sloping. The usual standards that one comes to expect of Club sites are in place so you will have no complaints there.

Nearby are 2 Tesco stores. I know one is a Tesco Extra (giant warehouse) not sure about the other, and we could easily park with the caravans at Tesco Extra as there is so much car parking available.

Culloden Field is just along the road if you are interested in Scottish History.

Hi again George,

I agree with Lady Maureen that C.C. site at Culloden is excellent if you want to be reasonably near Nairn but it does slope quite steeply in places. To be perhaps a little nit-picking, I don't like to be told where I must pitch as was the case when we went there a year or three ago particularly as it was a pitch on one of the most sloping parts of the site and a pitch I would never have chosen - but the warden was adamant.

Rob,

I'm puzzled that you could not choose your pitch.I read the Club rules this morning ( p262 )and it states:

On arrival pitches may be chosen from those available. However outfit size or weight may require specific pitch allocation.

How busy was the site when you arrived ?

I remember going on to a commercial site and the horrible little man in charge insisted on us going onto a pitch which was really tight for manoeuvering and the rest of the site was empty!!

Maybe he just didn't like your face )

To Lady Maureen.

Hi Lady Maureen,

At the time of our visit to Culloden our caravan was a small one (12 feet)so that size and weight were not a consideration. The bloke who directed us to the pitch was a bit officious and you may be right in that he didn't like my face (I don't much either) but it could be he just wanted to put the riff-raff in their place. (Hope the Caravan Club don't take that seriously!)
