At the minute we have a 2004 550/6, but are thinking about changing to a 2006 460/4.

Has anyone been to the caravan show at Birmingham and seen the new Bailey Ranger 460/4? What do you think of it? We like the idea of the fixed double bed at the rear of the van, if not could anyone recommend a van with a fixed double bunk at the rear?

Both the caravan magazine and the CC in their latest issue have tested this van. Looks fine, but the bed is too narrow for my liking. I personally feel there are better available at a similar price.

If your reason for changing is the length of the van then wait.

Smaller is not easier. I know that sounds odd but a shorter van reacts quicker and can be more difficult to handle and IS more difficult to reverse.

Lolly,

I always think it's a mistake to downsize your caravan when you have children and dogs, you will really miss the extra space.

We found, when we had the kids, we always went for the bigger van, the children had more space for their bits and pieces and we were'nt falling over the dog all the time.

Anyhow, what about your dryer, where's that going to go!! LOL

Lolly,

It is not really appropriate to recommend any particular van, after all your choices are probably completely different from mine. That is what makes it so much fun for the manufacturers.

We spend a large portion of the year in Europe as we enjoy the heat and sun so we have gone for a European supplied van, with the door on the offside, as this is more appropriate for us. My wife and I also have a complete distaste for ovens so again the continental style suits us better. We have adopted the European idea of cooking and eating outdors as much as possible, and it is amazing what you can knock up on an electric frying pan/cooker and a BBQ, not necessarily at the same time mind you. Now that we are retired and kids are long gone, we can even indulge in the odd restaurant meal, so full cookers are a waste to us. But I do recognise that there are many who much prefer the UK styling and enjoy the style of camping here. We have this funny old rule when we are looking at caravans. Does the interior shout 'Ambre Solaire' at you? If not, forget it.

If you still don't think I am completely mad, do have a look at some of the European vans such as Dethleffs, Cristall, Hobby, Adria etc. You may be pleasantly surprised at what they offer, and most now have left hand doors if required.
