New design of Awning

With 25 years experience in caravaning and a career in Design Engineering i have come up with a new design for a caravan awning.

I have considered approaching awning manufacturers , but i have no patents and in any case probably not worth the effort from experience.
I am considering making some prototypes but again that would involve talking to manufacturers.

Can anyone else suggest a better route?

Thanks

Andy

If you want to keep to the phyical prototype route then a sailmaker is, I suggest, going to be unlikely to be interested in pinching your idea.
I would though first model it something like quarter scale, borrowing the wife's sewing machine and buy some lightweight fabric. That should highlight any major construction errors and be a good vehicle to discuss a full size prototype with potential makers.

Hello Andy,

Trying for a patent is fraught with difficulties, it usually costs a lot, and it only needs one bit of evidence that the process or product has seen light of day in some form or another to prevent a patent from being granted. I have to be honest with you, I have seen multitudes of different tent and awning constructions and framing systems, it is difficult to believe there is a totally new concept to be found that would be sufficiently unique to make it patentable - but I could be wrong.

Copyright on the other hand is a different kettle of fish. and having evidence of a design recorded may enable you to get some protection. You need to speak to a a patent agent for some professional advice.

As for getting prototypes made, it is a simple matter to arrange a confidentiality agreement with your model maker. again, it would be wise to get professional help to draft the agreement. Contact you local Confederation of British Industry, or Chamber of Commerce. they will almost certainly be able to point you towards advisers who are experienced in business matters.

Hi John ,

Thanks for your comments - I agree a patent is difficult - I took one out years ago for a DIY tool and whilst it was effective many ' copies' appeared.
I think i will go for manufacturing a few that i can use for testing etc and I will try to find someone like a sailmaker who has no interest in the caravan industry.

Cheers
Andy
