Having just aquired my new 'van (weighing in at @1400kgs max.) I am now having to change my car for something a bit bigger. At present I have a Ford Focus 1.8 tdi (old shape) and like it that much that I am thinking of buying the new Focus or maybe the C max. (it will be a deisel). Has anyone towed with either of these, and can recommend them? Will they be appropriate for my caravan in terms of power and weight? Thanks for any replies.

We got a C-Max 2 lifter turbo diesel.

Had it new last year it is fast for a diesel.

Do not have the ford tow bar fitted has it can only pull 1275 kg with it on.

We had a witer tow bar fitted to owner one had no treble yet.

Kerd watt is 1500kgs (85% 1300)

We had now trouble yet with the car yet.

Some times you don't now you got the van on the back of you.

Seem to be good on diesel as well.

Its got the same engine has the modau in it.

I hope this help you.

Do I understand you correctly, Mark, that the Ford towbar for the Focus CMax is only rated at 1275kg although the 2 litre diesel may pull 1400kg? I find that very strange. If that is the case, it sounds as though someone at Ford hadn't done their homework properly.

Lutz yes you are understanding me.

The tow bar is detachable so think the pin that holes it in is the week bit.

We found the information in one of fords information on the C-Max.

We pull 1300kg with owners..

Some one who use this forerun pull a van more the 1300kg.

I too thick that ford as not did their homework properly.

I hope this will help put so light on it.

Thanks for that -is it Mark or Samanosoke?- I had a test drive in the 2.0ltr Tdci on Saturday and was well impressed. I see from a previous post a forum member called Daventura also gave a good report. Only problem now is the miserable trade in offered on my existing focus, might try to sell it privately but I am getting very frustrated not being able to get away with the new 'van because of no suitable tug. Maybe I did things back to front!

Derek,

I would heed others users advice on this forum and buy a 4x4, if you have a healthy bank balance a new Disco would be superb, if on the other hand your other half has been shopping in debenhams to increase the size of her/his (you never know) wardrobe then a Kia Sorrento would fit the bill just as well.

A 4x4 for a caravan of only 1400kg! That's going over the top a bit. Soon we'll be having people recommending 4x4's for Eriba Puck's as the only possible alternative, too.

I am really becoming confused here. On the one hand, on another thread, Clive is saying a suitable tow car is always going to be a compromise and on the other Lutz is saying its silly to buy a 4x4. As a newcomer who needs to fork out for a new tug, what which would be the best choice?

I'm not saying it's silly to buy a 4x4 but there really isn't any need if the only reason is to tow a caravan of 1400kg. There are plenty of cars that will happily pull that weight. Unless you plan to do a lot of towing on muddy fields it really is an unnecessary expense, especially if you don't intend to take the caravan out very often.

Derek, welcome to the fold. It is so blatently obvious that Lutz is the intelligent one in this debate. Make sure that you weigh everything up before you make a new vehicle purchase. I can reaffirm that the focus cmax is the best option if you want a vehicle for towing and a sensible one for the majority of the time that you will drive it without a caravan on the back. How is that a compromise?

Sorry Kanga, I was not inferring that at all. It was only the Lutz/Clive differing opinions that I was referring to in order to help Derek to see sense. Cheers me old fellow troll!

Derek I thort you would like to see this Mark (Samanosuke)

The MPV revolution has taken a firm hold at Ford's European operations. Following the announcement that Ford's sportily styled SAV concept car would form the basis of the second-generation Galaxy, Autocar can exclusively reveal that an even larger and more luxurious vehicle is in the pipeline. The highly versatile car is depicted here in computer-generated form, based on secret inside information.

Known internally as CD340 LMV (luxury multi-purpose vehicle), the big seven-seater has been conceived to crown Ford's European model line-up. High equipment levels will mean the car is pitched as a successor to the long-discontinued Scorpio when it heads into UK showrooms early next year. Prices are tipped to start at around

Thanks for the information Mark. I have seen some photos for this vehicle somewhere and it looks a cracker. Only downside for me would be the price of a new one. But in a couple of years who knows? Cheers, Derek.
