Hi we have recently bought our first caravan privately. We thought we had been thorough and took our own damp metre and checked it. We have since had the caravan serviced and the readings are very high in areas - 30 and 60 around the top where it appears we have had a a problem with the awning rails. The engineer had suggested re-sealing but will this cure the problem. Please help very concerned as we are very new to it all. Thank you

Hello P0tters

Welcome to the forum....

Can you tell us what make age and model of caravan you have bought...

Where about's approximately did your engineer find the high readings front / back / middle / near to the door / awning light ?? was it on both sides of the van ?? did he check round your roof lights ?? are there any marker lights near to where the high reading were found ??

Thank you so much for the reply. The caravan is CLermont Se 490/5 it's registered year is 2000 we think. We were told by the seller 2003 but by the windows it says year 2000. The damp report shows high readings bottom right corner along the bottom right and the edge of the front of the caravan. Can you send photos on here? I could put a photo of the damp report. Thank you so much for your advice.

Yes you can put photos on here to show us where the damp has been found

Have a read of this link

And maybe this will help by explaining how to put photos on the forum..

When you upload a photo to photobucket you then need to click on the link at the side of the word Direct, it will highlight and quickly say copied ..

When you click on the tab to insert a photo you need to remove the htpp:// before you paste your link into that box

The box will then look like this ...

Then put a size into the box for the photo size and past the link into the box below.

Just remember that when you click insert it will put the photo were the cursor is .....

The awning rail needs completely removing and both the van and the rail need cleaning, then re sealing and fitting back on with new st /st screws to hold it back in place ....

The right hand wheel arch needs checking as it's showing a high reading either side of it .... same again .... remove check for problems and reseal .....

What you have got to remember that everything that has been fitted to the van with a sealant joint will eventually require resealing ......

Gagakev has experience in this field of repair with a link to photos ..... ;)

Thank you so much for your help this forum is fantastic, have been worrying ever since we have got the report. In your opinion if we do those things will the van be ok for a good few year? Just worried we have made a mistake in buying and lost our money. I'll upload some photos of the front now, thanks again.

HI P0tters, big welcome to the forum.

Have a look HERE

This was done on my old van a 1995 Abbey, photo's of the awning rail about half way down.
When you remove the awning rail please be careful not to bend it, get someone to help you, two engineers told me it couldn't be removed and used again!!! I like proving people wrong :)
What doesn't show in the photos is that when I replaced the rail I filled the existing holes with mastic and used a slightly bigger width stainless screw to get a better fixing .
Any question's just ask away,

Edit; Forgot to add that I have my current van to do on one side as my damp report was high in one area. :( :(

You may also find the plastic cover strip is brittle and need replacing.
make sure you source the the correct sealant like sikaflex 552 or Soudall and the roll mastic was W4,
