hi everyone, my partner and i have just bought a lmc twin axel van, its 1991, weve only had it a day and have found out we cant insure it as the door is on the wrong side and we cant go on lots of sites as its twin axle and at 24 foot including hitch it may be too long. not a good start to our caravaning holidays, just to top it off now i find that it may be too wide to legaly tow! can anyone please tell me its not true and put my mind at rest please? i knew it was a bit big but i fell in love with it and it was too cheap to turn down. deb

It would be the length that would stop it going on certain sites, not it being twin axle. If it is more than 7 foot 6 inches wide it is illegal to tow it with a car (or 4x4) you would have to use a commercial vehicle. Sorry if that is bad news.

A lot of continental vans have the door on the wrong side and they manage to get insured just fine. I have never been refused a site and I have a 24 foot twin axel so I dont see what the problem is - ah hang on the width thing is the killer, what width is it?

Im afraid William is right for once.

At 7ft 6" wide the LMC is legally too wide by 3" to tow with a 4x4 or car. However here is just how stupid the law is.

You could haul it with a VW T130 sport line van with a three seat conversion. Thus giving you a 5 seat "day van" which is not only narrower than a 4x4 but also less well equipped as it has two wheel drive and no splitter box (hi-lo ratio).

I have seen plenty of these vans being towed by 4x4's.

Pitching should be no real problem as most sites do cater for vans with a 24ft body length anyway. You would be best advised though to ring and book a pitch just to allay any reservations about the particular make of van as some people see them as pikey vans.

It wouldn't bother me if a LMC van parked next to me as Im a full timer anyway.

I have had a twin axle van myself and I adopted the same stance of pre booking as some sites don't appreciate people with twin axle vans turning too tight and churning up the grass.

Hope this hasn't put you off, and I hope you enjoy caravanning.

hi, thanks for your advice, im not put off at all, just have an excuse to go and see the van again today ( to measure it) i think my scenic is ok to tow it as it can tow 1300 and on the plate on the van it says unladen weight 1175, max laden weight 134, im assuming i can put 134kg in it which will make the van 1309! can i get away with 9kg? i wouldnt put much stuff in it anyway as i can put it in the car, is this right or am i kidding myself? much appreciated, deb and pat

hi, i spoke to the man that is looking after the van today and he said its a lmc dominant 590 k. its only 7 foot wide so thats fine, just the weight issue to overcome now, may have to trade the scenic in as renaults seem to have very low tow weights. so looking forward to cleaning her up and getting on the road very soon, cant wait my 3 year old is so excited and she's only seen photos of the bunks. deb
