Nissan Pathfinder v Mitsubishi Shogun

Having spent ages trailing around 4x4 dealers we have finally narrowed the list for our new tow car down to these two. We need to pull our new Bailey Wyoming and time to decide is running out with the caravans fast approaching delivery date.

( all getting very exited) We would welcome any feedback good or bad from owners etc of either of these vehicles, or any others for that matter. We have a slight question mark against the power of the Pathfinder because it is only 2.5 engine. But dont know whether this is valid.

Thanks

Can't help with specifics but you could compare both cars using What Car. This would give you running costs, fitted kit etc. We are taking a Grand Cherokee out for a weekends test run, to see how we like them.

Well I must admit to being a touch envious - my dream caravan and a new car to tow it with!

I would go for the Mitsi myself having happily towed with a Shogun, albiet an older model. They will tow anything any where I always say and they don't break - well the old ones didn't.

The Pathfider is probably just as capable but is a bit of an unknown in the marketplace as yet so that would be another reason to choose the Shogun as it is a proven design.

If there is really nothing between the two in your eyes then maybe the deal you get will clinch things - free towbars, free service, longer warranty, discounts, higher trade in or zero % finance are attractive deal makers.

Hi Trudy, We tow our Wyoming with a Hyundai Terracan, it came with a 5 year warranty, group 12 insurance and does everything we want it to. It tows fantastic, before we had ours we watched while someone pulled about a dozen cars, caravans and motorvans out of knee deep mud up a steep hill! On the down side you don't get all the gadgets and gizmos as you would on a Shogun but by buying a Terracan it left enough money in the pot for a new Wyoming. If you are still going for one of your choice, I would go for the Shogun, you see an awful lot towing very capably. Good luck and enjoy your caravan. Mark

The Nissan is a modern efficient 4x4, the Shogun although a good car is showing its age. I know which I would have, but buy the one you like the best.

Forget about the Shogun, although they are a capable vehicle the technology is getting long in the tooth.

I have had a Pathfinder for a year towing a Swift Conqurer twin axle covering approx 4000 miles towing with no problems and getting 23-24 mpg. I previously towed with Range Rovers and Discos but I find the Pathfinder has more power and the six-speed gearbox is excellent.

Another thing to consider with an engine size of 2.5 insurance is less and servicing intervals is 18,000 miles with a Pathfinder and 9,000 with a Shogun.

I did consider a Disco3 but I thought their solo weight was too heavy and wasted the extra power over the Pathfinder.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Geordie I did not mean to cause offence to all the Shogun owners (I did consider one before I chose the Nissan) but if purchasing new it makes sense to go for the latest technology.

Hi Trudy, we have the 3.2 diesel manual Shogun on 02 plate towing the same van as you will be, as I think I have answered in another section it is superb,I can't speak for the Nissan but we have had 2.5 diesel RR and Discovery and both seemed OK at the time but the Shogun 3.2 diesel is great. If you are not looking for a new Shogun any from 02 onwards look very similar to the latest shape so don't look dated and I prefer the idea of the well proven Shogun to the new unproven Pathfinder, Nissan also have a habit of bringing out larger engine versions at a later date as with Terrano, they went to 3 litre after a spell with 2.7 litre diesels. Another consideration is the nearness of the relevant dealer, if you think it important to use the main dealer which one will be easier for you to get to for spares and repairs etc.

I don't think you can worry about engine size, surely it is its out put that matters. The RR TD6 is a 3 litre engine the Disco3 a 2.7, but power and more importantly torque is far higher in the TDV6 2.7 litre. I know plenty of people that have been mightly impressed with the Pathfinder (unless you drive off road)A new Shogun is due so its residuals will be hit and at the end of the day it is old technolgy, that is not to say it is an old car. If you want refinement and offroad ability then the Disco is still the way to go, if you want all the toys or at a cheaper price then the Pathfinder has got to be a better bet. Although reading the Jeep thread, sounds that is worth a look too.

Just to say that we really like our Pathfinder which we have had for about a year. The 7 seats can be a real bonus. Haven't towed with it yet as just getting our new caravan in three weeks but solo we get over 36 mpg over all conditions. Looking forward to towing with it!

Do you have a manual or auto Pathfinder, what speed are you doing to acheive 36 mpg. Thanks
