No idea what size a sterling europa 555 is, but I tow a Hymer (MTPLM 1600kg) with a 55 plate diesel (136 hp DCI) and it is fantastic.
Cruises at 60 mph, accelerates well even uphill, and very stable over the 5000+ miles I have used it. It has a 100kg towbar limit with a short overhang from the rear wheels which helps a lot. Fuel consumption is about 37mpg solo running about generally, and towing on motorway gives 26mpg. These figures are corrected for the wildly (10%) overreading speedo which I have accurately calibrated over 100miles of motorway with reference to the marker posts, some maths required as these are in km!
Additionally you get a great view driving with a large sunroof as well, and a proper full size spare wheel.
Yes there are turbo problems with this model, mine has had to be replaced but Nisssan paid, most should be done by now.

Which xtrail are you asking about, model, tpye?
The latest model T31,
or the T30 which was replaced in 2007 ish.
Some T30's were two wheel drive, avoid.

I would make sure its the 134bhp model available from late 2003 i believe.
I had the 2004 SVE which is a great tow car. Kerb weight 1650 kg.

While i had the inter cooler replaced, the car is still on its original turbo. My son still runs it.

You must make sure the boost sensor has been replaced under recall, or the ECU reprogrammed, or both, i just had the sensor replaced.

If you go for the 112bhp? model, these had some issues with injectors, look for black smoke from the exhaust.
And rattly time chains, due usually to the chain tensioner failing i believe.

Note both engines sound very noisy when first started up, this is normal.

We tow a 2010 Swift Charisma 550 (which is possibly almost identical to yours) with our 2009 173 ps X-Trail. MTPLM vs Kerbwieght is probably around 85% (1495 vs ~1750) but we put virtually anything of any weight in the car and have no problems with stability. Power is more than adequate, we hauled up some steep hills around the French Alps this summer with no concerns at all.
