No gas in van

I'm getting no gas in my Bailey caravan. The Truma regulator appears to be working as I have gas coming out of the BBQ point which is the van side of the regulator - or is it allowing gas out at the incorrect pressure so the cooker does not work at this pressure?

I have also opened the T piece on the other side of the BBQ connection and gas is coming through.

None of the gas appliances work. All inlet valves have been opened. I am using Butane from a 7Kg bottle, but it is a couple of years old - probably 2003/4.

Am I missing something obvious?

Gary have you looked in the cupboard near the oven at low level there is a set of gas isolation valves for all the appliances. check the incomming valve on the manifold it could have been knocked into the off position. By someone else of course LOL

I've checked those many times over. Would the Truma valve operate but at the wrong pressure for the various units?

It is possible that the gas bottle is low in gas therfore low in presure. There may just be suficient presure for the BBQ point but not the van. Try a fresh cylinder.

I was wondering whether that may be the case because the gas is low. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

I have tried two bottles - admittedly both on the low side, but working last year.

I have in the past used gas bottles for our cadac that werent able to give enough presure in the van. Remember there is a lot more pipe work in the van to be presurised.

we have a stoves hob with a glass lid in our swift. If the lid is not right up ( last 1/4 inch ) the gas cut of valve isolates the cooker. changed a bottle before i found this regards Bob

Gary, We had a similar problem with our old crown van immediately after it was serviced. In our case it turned out to be a tiny bit of water in the gas pipe ( left there from the dealers method of pressure testing the gas pipes ). Try running your space heater on gas,If it works then the problem lies with the cooker supply. In our case we managed to get the oven working, which in turn heated the pipework on the hob enough to turn the water into steam, which then came through the cooker jets !.

Hello Gary,

Because gas systems in caravans are used far more infrequently than normal domestic appliances, the equiepment will deteriorate just becuase of time.

If you have gas available at the BBQ point then that suggests that the regulator is working, so the problem is either with the pipe work or the other appliances.

It is not possible for anyone to accuratly diagnose your difficulties on this forum, so I would recommend that you arrange to have the whole system checked by a gas fitter who can check things first hand.

Hi Gary,

I had the same problem with my new avondale in 2004, the gas would not light so i followed all the usual checks, all seemed fine so i decided to remove the flexible pipe that connects the gas bottle to the caravans regulator, when i blew down it i found it had a one way valve inside and had fitted it the wrong way round, once swapped the other way all was ok and has been eversince.

Hi Gary.

We had the same issue last weekend traced the fault to the Truma regulator, luckily our dealer was only 10 mins drive from where we was sited, so a quick trip up the road, the conversation that then followed was that, all the failures that they have been involved with was the use of Butane not Propane, and you have guessed we used Butane, they gave me a replacement and exchange my full bottle of Butane for a larger Propane (paid the difference for the extra gas), fitted the new regulator no more problems, so if like me it looks like the regulator to me, this is a problem that Truma are looking into, currently they are in a legal argument with Calor over the failures.

Hi folks - use propane all year except summer in France when I use Camping Gaz (refills obtainable on continent). Is there an issue with Camping Gaz butane or is it just with Calors.

Hello John,

Camping Gaz is basically Butane, and not really any different to Calor Butane. Most UK caravans will run happily on either Butane or Propane, provided the appropriate regulator is used.

There are several different standards that have been used for gas pressures in the UK. Traditionally we used 28mB for butane and 37mB for propane, but more recently a common 30mB standard has been adopted for both gas types.

Check in your caravan hand book, or look at any of gas burning appliances and a data plate should tell you which standard applies. If in any doubt consult your dealer

As for your choice of Propane in the UK and Camping Gaz in France, there is some much sense to that, for two reasons, firstly, for any given ambient temperature Propane will have a much higher bottle pressure than Butane which might have safety implications in a hot Frech summer. secondly camping gaz is more widely available and it reduces the number of regulators or connections you need to take with you.

Hi John - thanks for response. I thought maybe the issue with Calor butane was more to do with the way Calor process/produces/makes its gas. Someone informed me that it was to do with "impurities" contained within the Calor product. Just wondered if it was the same for Camping Gaz production!

Hello again John,

When you purchase Propane or Butane LPG for use in caravans, it is the commercial grade which will contain other fractions of the LPG's. to achieve a particular combustion or usage performance. This is not uncommon and is allowed wthin the international commercial standards for the definitions of the gasses.

Other non LPG impurities may creep into the mix but but these are unlikely to vapourise, and so will collect at the bottom of the bottle. These impurities will not cause a problem provided the bottle is stored transported or used in the upright attitude.

From my own experience when impurities get into the pipework, it is down to poor bottle handling, or the wrong grade of flexible pipes which can be partially disolved by the LPG. The residue is a thick oily type of deposit that blocks up the small jets in gas burners, or clogs gas valve ports.

It is unlikely that the problem is soley related to one brand of gas. Even though there are many differnt brand names, it is likely that in any given area, the different brands are all sourced from a limited number of manufactures.
