Currently, caravans over 2.3m wide are treated as statics which are zero-rated, not as touring caravans which are standard rate.

If the present consultation is followed by removal of the 2.3m restrictions, then it seems reasonable for HMRC to take advantage of increased revenue and impose VAT on the wider ones.

I suppose two issues. Firstly, at present, it is almost impossible to tow a caravan legally over 2.3 mts wide with an ordinary car/4X4 because of the requirements of using a vehicle over 3500kgs. So if they can't be towed they are as Roger suggests statics. But I also think the Governement will so change the rules as there would be no foundation for a difference in VAT. Unfortuantely charging VAT of wider caravans will unlikely put the UK's finances back in balanace!

You can tow a caravan over 2.5m in width if a foreigner and thisi is why the legilation is being rushed through so that Britain is equal to EU regualtions. the same happened with large trucks and trailers from the continent which is why a lot of our bridges had to be strengthened a few years ago

It is a foregone conclusion that it will happen in the near future which at that point the 2.55m wide caravan will lose its residential status and will become subject to VAT.

So if you want to buy a 2.55m caravan, do it now before VAT kicks in.

Reading the write up on the Rimor caravan that seems to have started this debate, it is really only the thickness of the windows that have made this caravan over the 2.3m width limit. As it stated in the article, Rimor were about to change the windows to flush fitting ones to stay within the width limit but didn't need to in the end.

Looking at the pictures of them I'd say to anyone, get in there now before the prices do go up.

Under current legislation, you cannot tow a 2.5m wide caravan in the UK, even as a foreigner.

Lutz I think you are wrong as the UK has to comply with EU regs which is why at present you cannot be busted for towing a 2.55m caravan even though you are a UK citizen with a UK car.

If you were given a ticket it is high unlikely that they will be able to enforce it unless of course the caravan was more than the recommended towing limit of the car which could be more than 100%.
