Hello Heather,

Nose weight is not a fixed number, so we can't tell you what yours will be. It changes and is dependant on how you load things into the caravan. Its just like a see-saw with the caravan pivoting on its main wheels.

You adjust the nose load by positioning the the items you load into the caravan either in front of the wheels to make the nose heavier of behind the wheels to make it lighter.

Both the car and caravan manufacturers set maximum limits for the nose weight for their product. Caravans are typically up to 100Kg but the cars are often less. You must never exceed the lower of the two limits. You must check the data plate fixed to the cars towing bracket which will tell you the maximum limit for the car. Medium sized saloon cars are typically only 75Kg so you do have to check.

That tells you what limit is, but to find out what your caravan nose load is you have to measure it. As there is potentially a legal implication if you get the nose load wrong, it is important that you measure it correctly.

You must ensure:-

The caravan is on level, horizontal ground.

The hitch of the caravan must be at the same height from the ground as when it is hitched to the car with both the car and caravan loaded with passengers and luggage for the journey

The hitch of the caravan should be supported on the measuring scales (Bathroom scales with a cut to length broom stale, with a foot to spread the load on the scales) and the jockey wheel raised so the full hitch load is supported on the scales.

I hope this helps.
